1994! We were in our 20's and not a care in the world. What an amazing time for Food, Current Events, Icons, Pop Culture, Films, TV & Sports. This years dive is a good one. ;)
1994. You would not believe the things that I hear at my job that I overhear. I'm not I'm not eavesdropping. It's just it's conversation that happens and they're talking really loud until like everybody in the lobby can hear it. Of course. And it's just one of those. This this woman, she came in to watch her husband play uh adult league hockey. And there's two other wives that that always come too. So the three of them, you know, and they they only know each other because I think they come to their husband's game and they just like, oh let's hear, let's sit together and talk. But like I don't think they're friends outside of it because the vibe I got was yeah, that that wasn't quite the case. It's just they're friendly there, type of thing. This woman was going off about her job and how that her hours at her job were guaranteed, and she would constantly start with the phrase, and I'm like, hey, and then she'd go into whatever she was saying, but she would do it just like that every time. And I'm like, hey, maybe we don't do that. And I'm like, hey, that's on you, not on me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_03And I'm like, hey, and she kept saying that. Like, I'm like, and I'm like, hey, and I'm like, do you work with horses? Do you listen to these? Oh my god, I wonderful conversations, and I'm like, hey, hilarious.
SPEAKER_02Hilarious.
SPEAKER_03Wow. Millennials, and you could tell the other two women were just like like they were dying for their husband's game to start. Like, is his game started? Can we go in now and watch and stop listening to this woman complaining about her hours at her work? And oh, that was another thing too. She said, she was, yeah, and money hours are guaranteed. So at Christmas, when they want to take off for Christmas or Hanukkah, that's on them. That's not on me. Oh, wow. And I was just like, Wow, that's that's how offices work. Yes.
SPEAKER_00What is her job that she's not getting her hours? I don't know, but it sounds like a waitress.
SPEAKER_03Hey.
SPEAKER_01That's your problem, not mine.
SPEAKER_00Like, hey.
SPEAKER_01Like, hey. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna have to start watching my complaining in public.
SPEAKER_01In public? Yeah, because I might be eavesdropping and who knows who's listening. Someone's podcast is gonna have you win it. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03There was this woman I was at the mall today. Is that this restaurant? And then she was just complaining. She was sitting outdoors and we were in the middle section. We weren't quite inside. It was like, hey. Yeah, and it was like, hey.
SPEAKER_00Hey, hey. You know how you have to do the lookaround when you're like at a restaurant? Do you only in LA?
SPEAKER_03Only in LA you do that.
SPEAKER_00Not here.
SPEAKER_03Not here.
SPEAKER_00Every time I come home and I go to a restaurant, because I forget that you know, like I know people there. Oh, the small towns are. Oh so you have to do the big like, look, make sure no one you know is in the whole restaurant.
SPEAKER_01I guess I'm in that mode where I don't seem to care anymore.
SPEAKER_00Could be.
SPEAKER_01Maybe that's it. I mean, I just got to that age where I don't really care who hears me. I'm not a boisterous person.
SPEAKER_03Tell the story again about the Ford dealership and the license plate.

SPEAKER_03No, no, we've we talked about that one already. That's on. Dave going off on the car dealership. Joanne, what's been going on here with you this week? Anything fun?
SPEAKER_00I'm sorry, I've been sick all week.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, okay.
SPEAKER_00Before I got sick, I went to a pottery class. Oh okay. Does pottery make you sick? Um, no, I think I've been sick like a week and a half. I think it was from the airplane, and I always try to like beef up with some airborne and stuff. So I take it it does evidently not. But I I think it's right, didn't you? I think it helped a little bit because it it hasn't really developed into a full-blown cough like I usually get.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, but I've been taking like elderberry airborne for two weeks.
SPEAKER_01It's more of a mind thing. I I take I took it at at some point uh when I was going back and forth when I was commuting at work and actually in front of people. And it seemed to it it probably didn't do much, but in my head, it felt like I was doing something proactive to maybe that's more of it like a placebo kind of scenario. Right.
SPEAKER_00It's inevitable. Anytime I step on a plane, I am going to get sex. That's a heavy.
SPEAKER_03Have you tried going in in the the hazmat suit? Yeah, that was inevitable.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03Is that what it uh walking sideways down the middle aisle with your arms up?
SPEAKER_01Not even touching anyone. Don't even touch the armrest.
SPEAKER_00And you know what I think it is? I think it's if I have a layover somewhere and I have to switch from the germs of one concealed tube to a metal.
SPEAKER_03It's like you're rolling the dice twice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I think my body's like, okay, I I I got these germs. No problem. Oh, but you're getting off. Getting on new, yeah, getting new.
SPEAKER_03So it's like these are just in from the West. Try out these.
SPEAKER_00Germs from San Antonio are fine, but germs in Houston.
SPEAKER_01Totally different. Yes. Totally different. I would say yes. I I can't.
SPEAKER_00So that's that's been the big news. But have I told you about our pottery?
SPEAKER_02No. No, is this a class?
SPEAKER_00Our hot potter.
SPEAKER_02No. Hello. Is he a Harry Potter?
SPEAKER_00He's not a Harry Potter. Okay. But he's a hot potter.
SPEAKER_02He's hot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. We went to Telltale. We went a few years ago to the pottery to um have like a little class on how he makes the pottery.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00And it was um all the women from the ladies' luncheon group in my neighborhood.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00And we sat there for like half an hour and just stared at him, absorbed in nothing of how to make pottery.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Wow. So now we whoever comes to visiting town, we go see the hot potter, buy a lot of time. Show them the potter.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00So they just started doing classes.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00So I signed up for it, and um I was absolutely horrible. And now I'm like paying attention.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Now that I have seen the disappointment in the hot potter's eyes, I no longer find him attractive. Oh, you know what you need?
SPEAKER_01You need a session like Ghost. You know, Ghost session. You need that one.
SPEAKER_00Some of the other ladies were insinuating that. And uh he's not into that. But yeah, I mean they make it look he's not not to meet to everybody else who did great. I'm sure they're like, oh, I'm gonna come back and do these classes on my so disappointed in your work. I would I yes. What did you make?
SPEAKER_01Did you make a mug or a vase or a well?
SPEAKER_00I had high hopes because I had taken a pottery class when we went to Portugal, and it was really cool. And I made like this really awesome kind of fluted bowl. I don't know if that makes sense, but and and another bowl. Okay. And I was having the best time. And I'm like, I got this pottery thing down. I'm gonna whip out like four pieces.
SPEAKER_01You're experienced, you bring stuff to the game, you're ready to go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So he's like giving us the the demo of how to do it. I'm like, okay, I'm gonna do it this way. But he was very meticulous. Like, you gotta keep your elbow on your leg and do all this stuff. So I, of course, did not want to disappoint the hot potter. Right. So I'm trying to do it. I could not get it. I was like slinging literally slinging clay all over station.
SPEAKER_01Maybe that's maybe.
SPEAKER_00I did clean it all up. I did clean it all up.
SPEAKER_03Slow it down your wheel.
SPEAKER_00But he did something. I don't know why I made him Italian.
SPEAKER_03He's the hot Italian.
SPEAKER_00No, that's the guy at the restaurant from a couple weeks ago. No, that one, the Italian. But yes, I was going too fast. I was trying to move through the process too quickly of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then I realized you know this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, then I realized my Portugal guy, who's, you know, he you know how Southern Europeans are. They're all la la la la la, do whatever you want, blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right. He um had us using both hands, and we could like form the clay and with both hands. And I have a real problem with um having my hands do different things. Okay.
SPEAKER_03How did you play cello for all of that?
SPEAKER_00I have no idea. Oh, yeah. I have no idea. That's like the only thing I can do. But you have this like pedal for the wheel, right? So it's your foot and then two hands. And they're doing different things. Anyway, I made something. Yeah, yeah. I could never, I could never.
SPEAKER_01You couldn't do that one. No. Usually that's both feet and both hands to something completely.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would die. I would die. I can't drive a stick shift for that reason. Yeah, because that's two feet and two hands. Yeah. Blows my mind. So I made something that's I hope is gonna resemble a little cat dish. And then finally, yes.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna need pictures. We need pictures of the Portugal version and then next to the Texas version. Texas version.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I I will I will compare and contrast.
SPEAKER_01Hata potter. I'm a hata potter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Not a Harry Potter.
SPEAKER_01I'm not heady. I'm a hottie.
SPEAKER_00I have seen a commercial for this new Harry Potter series on HBO. I haven't.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I I've known it's coming, but I haven't seen the trailer for it.
SPEAKER_00Well, I've been watching uh nine 90 Day before the 90 days all day today.
SPEAKER_03Oh. I don't know what that is. What is that?
SPEAKER_00Oh you've caught this. Have you not watched 90 Day Fiancé?
SPEAKER_03No. That one might be even below my.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh, really?
SPEAKER_03Maybe. We watched the opposite.
SPEAKER_00If you start at the beginning, it's incredible. There are like five spin-offs of it. It's amazing.
SPEAKER_03Is it on HBO Max?
SPEAKER_00It's on TLC.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00But I kept getting commercials for HBO Max. So I watched the Harry Potter commercial.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00Probably 17 times. Like I could recite it off by heart now. Because it was the same commercial. There's like 30 seconds of Harry Potter, and then it was Paradise, Euphoria, and then there's Practical Magic 2 is coming out. I hate commercials. Yeah. But when I watched these shows, and then Burger King.
SPEAKER_03Whopper Whopper Whopper Whopper Whopper Whopper. I didn't get that one. I love it.
SPEAKER_01What is with ESPN's coverage that they need to show me Smokey Bear uh commercials repeatedly? Like back to back to back. Well, I watched that commercial three times in a row while trying to watch the hockey game. And when they cut the commercial online that where I was watching through my direct TV feed.
SPEAKER_00Who was playing? Are there a lot of wildfires?
SPEAKER_01In that probably it was uh it wasn't Colorado. It was a uh it was the Philadelphia uh Pittsburgh series. Yeah. Huh. Yeah. So who knows? I swear it was back to back to back. And I went, wait, I just saw what is there a problem? They got an issue. Then I don't know if they had to make it up or something. I don't know what is going on.
SPEAKER_00Probably. And it's fire season. It is. I mean, that's the fire season, yeah.
SPEAKER_01True. But you know what? It's just it was insane. I was like, oh, is this the same damn commercial?
SPEAKER_03Dave, do you have corrections? Joanne, was that your were you?
SPEAKER_00That was my that was my weak week recap.
SPEAKER_03Your week recap.
SPEAKER_01I did continue my injury streak. Oh, well, Dave. I dropped the fish filter full of water on my foot while I was trying to carry it. I would clean it out and I dropped it. I have a giant bruise on the side of my foot. Um, the good thing is it doesn't hurt as I walk, but if I like in my shoe, I can it hurts. So that's fun. Oh and then I, for some reason, it's been a new streak of three weeks, uh tick every week on me. Now and the last one was the most disturbing. This was just on Sunday. We were I was out and about and um TMI, TMI. I don't need to know where it was. No. You don't?

SPEAKER_01Well, the problem is that I was I was done out in the yard. We got in the sh, I got in the shower, and I looked down and I was like, God damn it, there's a piece of fuzz on me. And I went to go grab it and it wouldn't come off. I was like, God damn it, it was on my nipple. It did bit it bit my left nipple. And I went, God damn it. Because I was like, God, why is my roused all day? And I got it. What the heck? Why was my nipples all hard? No. Um, yeah, I had a tick and tick on it. Uh and it wasn't like it was right, it it started hurting, it started itching right as I was getting into the shower. So for some reason he was climbing towards that, I guess. Yeah, he was aiming for the top of the hills and just went for it. And so, yeah, so there we go. That was fun. Stop fun. That was fun. So, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He did you are you gonna be okay? Like, are you gonna get Lyme disease now?
SPEAKER_01Well, I more than likely have it already because that was the third one that I had on me. But these guys are so freaking small, like pinprick small.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And I'm just like, what the heck was that?
SPEAKER_00They're horrible.
SPEAKER_01I'm just I don't know it, but I have never like Lisa's usually the one that gets it. My wife, she usually has them like all over her all the time. She deals with horses and stuff. So when she's out there with the horses, they're jumping off the horses and jumping on her. Um my god. Lately, the they've been medicating the horses with a new type of uh horse medication, so the when they bite the horse, they die, or they just have that type of repellent to them.
SPEAKER_00So she's gonna take that.
SPEAKER_01They they take the horse takes it, and so when she's out there with the horses, there's less ticks on the horses. So she's not getting them on her, but I've gotten now, and I'm like a great. So yeah, so that's fun.
SPEAKER_00They're like repulsed by her, obviously, because she's around all those. Right, exactly.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, it's fun. Gotcha. Um, so yeah, I do have a crap load of okay. Well, let me let me do my first two corrections.
SPEAKER_03Yes. So I kept saying that Jim Kerr was Tim Kerr, the lead singer of Simple Minds. Oh. He's always looked like a Tim to me and not a Jim. So in my head, I've always just called him Tim Kerr, but his name is actually Jim Kerr. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Like Tim Curry.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Or something. So that was one correction. Uh I also mentioned that Axel F was on the it was Axel F is actually from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, not the Miami Vice soundtrack.
SPEAKER_01Oh, right.
SPEAKER_03Because I said that I said Axel F, you know, Harold Fultemeyer from you know, my vice soundtrack, and I was like, yeah, like no, it was Beverly Hills Cop. Yeah. So those are my two directions from my clubs. I had a plenty.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, sorry. We're on a podcast, Dave. I can talk, yes. So I think we need to adjust uh Joanne's uh movie watching. Okay, because we seem to be creating references that she doesn't quite get when we go into the movies. I just wanted to bring that out. Or maybe we try to figure out what references we could bring up of popular movies that Joanne watches. So, Joanne, do you have any movies that like you are are popular for watching? Like, is there like a genre that you like? I know you hate horror movies.
SPEAKER_00I hate horror movies. I pretty much hate hate um any sci-fi.
SPEAKER_01Oh, great, great.
SPEAKER_00I love a good rom-com. Okay, and a nice period piece.
SPEAKER_01You're singing our language there. Um I mean, yeah, because we're fine. Part of I grew up basically in the theater uh during our 80s.
SPEAKER_03And both had parents that worked in video stores.
SPEAKER_01We turned around and we just had movies fed to us.
SPEAKER_00I used to I used to watch a lot more movies than I do now. I'm really more into TV because it's shorter.
SPEAKER_01Yes, of course.
SPEAKER_00You know, and and I don't know. I just there aren't that many interesting movies for me. Like I I don't get into the the uh Marvel stuff, you know, all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Oh, right, right.
SPEAKER_00Or um you know, maybe like the last last series I watched was Twilight, you know.
SPEAKER_01So popular stuff. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't think other things. Perfect. Okay, cool. Um we mentioned sorry, we mentioned Lethal Weapon. Uh his name is Martin Riggs. We get Riggs. Oh my god, crazy with that. It wasn't Gibbs, it was Riggs. And uh Roger Murtaugh was Murtaugh was it. Yes. Um uh the early internet was called the ARPANET. Right. And it was military, it wasn't uh associated with universities, although the universities played a part in it after the military started releasing it, because then the networks were the connected universities. Um the modern modem is at 9,600 and uh 115,000 bits per second, which is uh the measurements of what happens with uh uh transfer rates at bits per second. Um currently when you talk on the phone, it's at 8k bits per second. Okay. And um 100 gigabyte uh bytes per second is for enterprise networking. So those are the measurements you were talking about, as what they were now comparatively to what they were. Right. Oh, I thought one.
SPEAKER_00And what was it before?
SPEAKER_01A baud rate. 9600 bits. Like uh I was I had a modem that was 1200 bits per second. Right.
SPEAKER_00So just imagine now we're at 100 gig, which is oh a hundred gigabits bits per second. Oh that's a baud.
SPEAKER_01What's aud rate is basically the same thing. It's bits per sec, it's like a bits per second, it's a baud rate. It's how you're transferring the data.
SPEAKER_00Dave's tech corner. Sorry, yes, there we go.
SPEAKER_01Um the origin of uh where did I have this one? I don't know. Named after what is it? Oh, oh, the uh origin of the uh Wilhelm screen. Oh yeah. Uh we were talking about that. Uh 1951 in the first movie Distant Drums, uh, it was named after Private Wilhelm of the movie 1953, which was a Western movie where the gentleman falls off a cliff uh and the movie was called Charge at Feather River, which was another Western. Yep. And so that was that initial screen. Now, this one has been in a crap load of movies. Like I went up and looked up the list. Oh, yeah. These were just a couple that I grabbed off of. Uh 21 Jump Street, uh Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. Don't know if you know that one or not. It's very popular. Joanne might know it. Um, all the Despicable Me movies, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Finding Dory, Flash Gordon. Our favorite. I love that, I love that movie. Um, all of the Hobbit movies, all of the Indiana Jones, most of the My Little Pony, uh, all of the Pirates of the Caribbean, most of the Star Wars. Now that was an interesting one. I I was looking that one up. They had it in there because Star Wars was part of Warner Bros. And Warner Brothers holds on to this uh sound uh in its sound bank uh bank. And once they got bought and Disney took them over, they didn't show up in the last two. Eight and nine. So yeah, so that's kind of funny. Um all of the Toy Story ones, though, which is kind of funny because Toy Story was Disney, so it shows up in the Disney one. So it's not associated with that. Uh Zootopia, and then my favorite zoo uh zombie strippers. It was in zombie strippers, just to let you know. No, um the DeLorean doors. We talked about the DeLorean doors, yeah. And the doors winged up, right? So it was in in our heads that they were impossible to get in and out of because they winged up like that. They were actually built so they didn't create a lot of space between two cars, and they were created through uh human uh aerospace design and built out of to allow the exits in tighter spaces. Yeah, so they actually went up and created less space in between to give you that.
SPEAKER_03Right. Because they didn't fly out the size like wings and more upward and in. Right.
SPEAKER_01And the and the hydraulics and everything were like really enforced, like extra and reinforced, so you wouldn't have to keep replacing them. But yeah, an aerospace uh engineer created them. Right.
SPEAKER_00What are the Tesla doors like on that that uh SUV hundred thousand dollar model?
SPEAKER_03The truck thing. No, the X, the Model X, which is the SUV, yeah. It'll actually like drive to you without you being into the uh in the car. How does it do that?
SPEAKER_00But doesn't it have the kind of DeLorean doors?
SPEAKER_03Does it be a little bit more? I think the rear doors are like that. They're going. They come yeah, up and I don't know if they still have them or not, but uh I think the Model X got discontinued this year, actually. Oh really? And one of the other models that they had. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Um we mentioned the the Bears. The Bears and Basket from uh SNL was aired in 1991. 91. Yeah, and it was when the Chicago Bears went to the Super Bowl 20. Oh, so it was that.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't super old.
SPEAKER_01No, it wasn't crazy old, but we were doing eighty-five, right? Yeah. So six years ago. Yeah. Yeah. So ninety-one was when it aired. So we were off for a little bit. But yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, we said that, I think. I think we said it was a little later. Whatever.
SPEAKER_01Well, we did, but I didn't know the time, so we kind of went over the time. Uh Ghostbusters 2. Why don't you know these things? I know I should, right? Uh Ghostbusters 2, our rapping uh that was from 1989. Yep. When we did that. So a little later. Yeah. And uh we are sandwiched in between two uh special holidays. I don't know if you knew this, but tomorrow, oh, which again will be a week away, so you guys aren't gonna listen to this. And but uh Earth Day is tomorrow.

SPEAKER_01And we just missed pot day. So hopefully you celebrated 420 pot day.
SPEAKER_00I watched I watched a video of this guy interviewing people yesterday.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for it.
SPEAKER_00I guess it was in New York.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And um that he was like, What's the craziest thing that ever happened to you while you were high? And this guy goes, Well, I got in the car. I was wanting to go visit my sister. Next thing I know, I'm halfway to California. Okay, and this girl was like, this girl was like, I was with my boyfriend, and I thought I went blind for like 10 minutes. Oh my god. But my eyes were closed.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Wow. Another reason why you really shouldn't do drugs, kids. Just keep that out there.
SPEAKER_00420. Do drugs.
SPEAKER_01420. Yes, perfect. That's all I got. Okay, cool. Yeah, we had we had a bunch, but it was just for informed lift purposes.
SPEAKER_03Finally get into uh the year of 1994. 94.
SPEAKER_00I'm ready for I had food.
SPEAKER_03This is so exciting. There was so much food news in 1994. Really?
SPEAKER_00I I feel some sarcasm. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_03No, there were some iconic food trends in that was on it. Sarcasm. Yeah, that was. Uh so in 94, Snack Wells, Devil Food Cakes came out.
SPEAKER_01The healthy versions of desserts.
SPEAKER_03Because in 94, American food trends were defined as fat-free obsession. Yes, yummy obsession. Everybody wanted a fat-free version of this or a f yeah. So um also that year was uh when Pizza Net started, which was Pizza Hut's online ordering and delivery service.
SPEAKER_01Oh I think they were the first ones to do that.
SPEAKER_03They were, and it was called Pizza Net.
SPEAKER_01Pizza Net. Amazing.
SPEAKER_03And they so that was you know, that kicked off a whole new, you know, you can now order pizza from your app in your iPhone and all that. Uh so Reese's peanut butter puffs came out that year. Oh, good cereal. Good cereal. Really? I'm I I'm like I like the peanut butter filling in the Reese's peanut butter cup, but when you put it like in ice cream or cereal, oh you literally a peanut butter flavoring. The the flavor changes. It doesn't taste like Reese's to me.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I get that. I do get that, but as a cereal, I kind of liked that one.
SPEAKER_00I don't think I've ever had that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a chocolate puff with a peanut butter puff. So it's kind of like cocoa. Cocoa puffs with uh yeah, a peanut butter version in there.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I don't I don't know if I've I've heard ever heard of this one. I'm sure you guys have because you're like foodie people. Um the flavor saver tomato in 1994, the FDA gave the first GMO food approval for this longer lasting tomato.
SPEAKER_01Longer lasting, like in your system lasting? No, like it would stay ripe longer.
SPEAKER_03Or something. Yeah. I don't remember that. Interesting. I didn't know that. I didn't know that one either.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a new one.
SPEAKER_03Uh the clear soda trend following Crystal Pepsi from 92 to 93 and 94 still saw the tail end of the clear soda craze.
SPEAKER_00Um how is soda colored? Like, are we on the verge of it being taken away like because it's added? Oh, because of the stuff?
SPEAKER_01I think that it's a it is a colored, uh caramel coloring, I think.

SPEAKER_00Yeah, like big metal ones to make root beer in. Oh, yeah. And then her mom makes this amazing root beer, but it's gotta be in one of those metal cans to get some kind of taste. Wow. That's unique. So I I think she's gonna make it from Fourth of July, so I will report back.

So we we go to the performance, and it's the most somber like you know, thing you've seen, and and I will never forget this guy. He's like, uh he's dead, man. In the play during the play? Or no, he was in the aisle before the play started, like talking to somebody. And I was just like, oh my gosh, the guy blew his head off. How are you connected to him though? That's right. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_01That like I see, and that's the problem why celebrities get actually killed because people are so tied to them in that respect.

SPEAKER_00No, that was the San Francisco one. Oh, okay. The one in LA was like um around the time of the Golden Globes. Uh, my sister's boyfriend was there with his family.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_00And he had won like a radio contest to go see the Golden Globes, and they were there. Lucky best. And they were in the earthquake, yeah.

SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Wow. It was just yeah. I had to put him right there in the earthquake.
SPEAKER_00In the earthquake, in a high-rise hotel, too.

SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's kind of scary. Have you been in an earthquake?
SPEAKER_01We had one here and it was like Northern.
SPEAKER_00It was like so weird, but we had we had when my mom and sister and nephew came to visit us in LA for the first time. We are we parked at LAX and we're walking to the terminal, and I get this text from her, was there just an earthquake? And I was like, I didn't feel one. And she's like, I just got an alert saying there was an earthquake. And um, I look and sure enough, there was one, and I'm like, oh man, it would have been like the first one that I would have felt. I was so bummed. I'm like, I can't believe I'm like, I missed my earquake.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00Because I guess when you're driving, you don't feel them unless it's like major disaster quake. And so we get back to the apartment, and I was in the shower or something, and they're like, Oh my god, there's another one. I didn't feel that either. Wow.
SPEAKER_01And then so driving and showering for you is just it was crazy.
SPEAKER_00And then there was a third one, and that was the one that I felt. But my nephew was asleep, didn't even wake up. But it it was big, like it was moving stuff. Yeah, there were like three, right, three that night.
SPEAKER_01Well, it didn't move enough stuff because you slept you know, it didn't move enough stuff.
SPEAKER_00But when we lived in Gilroy in Northern California, I would wake up at least once a week feeling an earthquake, and I'd have to like check on my Quake Watch app.
SPEAKER_01And sure enough, it would be like a Quake Watch everybody.
SPEAKER_00Download it, use it. And you sign up for all the um early warnings for the earthquakes. They I never ever got one, but they do have a system where it's supposed to warn you that a quake is imminent.
SPEAKER_03That was just an in-app purchase scam they got John.
SPEAKER_01You know, in Seattle, get the earlier warning warning one. You know, in Seattle they had squash watch where you'd have to, if you saw a Sasquatch, you would report it.

Uh the but the top two movies that were um were given nominations was Forrest Gump because it was Forrest Gump's year. Forrest Gump, like, you know, crushed it. Uh Pulp Fiction had uh, you know, a couple nominations. Right. Um sadly, I don't think Shawshank Redemption actually got any nominations. Interesting. But yet it is like one of the greatest movies of all time.
SPEAKER_01I watch it whenever it's on. Like if it's on like TBS or TNT or something. I pass by and I'm like, oh gosh.
SPEAKER_03I know, and I always want to cry at the end. It's a nice one. Because he guys walking down the beach and it's oh my gosh.

And I've been to Germany many times. But if I have uh the opportunity to choose where I go, I always want to choose some place that I've never been. Some place new. Interesting.

SPEAKER_01Yeah. Because there's a lot to see out there.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, there is. There is a lot. A whole bunch that I'm never gonna see. Whole bunch of bunch. It's way too much for me to try to see. That's what the internet's for. Okay, so also the that year, The Lion King.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. That was out. It was that was part of the uh the big block of uh movies coming out for Disney.
SPEAKER_03Right. And it was Disney's 42nd animated feature, full-length feature. Wow. When I saw the trailer upcoming for the Lion King, they made a very, very, very big point of Disney's 40 second animated pic, you know, picture whatever thing. And I was like, wow, that sounds like a short movie. 40 seconds.
SPEAKER_00That's an amazing dad gem.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's I came over. I've been sitting on that joke for 30 years. My goodness. Exactly. But that's like, wow, that's a short movie. That is pretty short. It's only 40 seconds. 40 seconds? Wow. Wow. It's about a about a dog or something. I don't know. Quick. Yes. Oh, also that summer, the one of the big popcorn films that came out early, I think as I recall, it came out in May, uh, was Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Muller.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh. That was 94. It was 94.
SPEAKER_03That was one of those movies that like it advertised the bus, the jump. The jump. The jump in the bus. That was like the whole like, yeah, you gotta hook you in, you know, to see it. And like when you it pulls you in in that first the first 25 minutes of speed is all the whole elevator sequence. Yes. To start the film. So you're lost. So you're like, I thought this was a bus trip. Right, exactly. And like it doesn't, but it hooked you in because that was such a like, you know, right uh in your face, boom, we're gonna throw you into the situation, and you're you know, you know, you you forget that it's a bus uh a bus trip. A bus trip. So and then they get so they trick you into it, and it was kind of it's a it's a nasty trick, but it's a good little trick. Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_03It's movie magic is what that is movie magic, right? And it just shows you right off the bat it's not all about the bus jumping over, you know, yeah. The bus jump.
SPEAKER_01Intricate, has layers like an onion.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. Uh The Professional came out that year with um oh my gosh, what was it? Uh Jason Statham. No, John Renault and a very young Natalie Portman. Natalie Portman, yes. I remember that.
SPEAKER_00Oh, was she the daughter or something?
SPEAKER_01She was the uh orphan.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she was the orphan who I think he wanted to become. He killed her parents. Yeah, and then she was in the buttons, he doesn't take care of kids, if you know what I mean, air quotes. Take care of them. Right. So he took care of her and brought her into his life and started showing her the ropes because she wanted to learn how to be an assassin as well. Yeah. Well, such a great movie. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01Oh, such a yes, a mentor type. It is so good. Oh my gosh. It is pretty good. I give you that one.
SPEAKER_03Uh uh, what's his name? Um not Gary Pullman. What is the cop for the cop investigating Gary Pullman? Gary Buse. No, Gary Oldman was fantastic as the the cop in that. Oh, yeah, but uh so the only movie on the top 10 list of that year that I did not see was this next one, which was Quiz Show, which I think got nominated for some so good. Really? Should I go back and watch it?
SPEAKER_00No. Yes, cool.
SPEAKER_03I know when yes are I have to now because we got it. One heads, one tails, and I'm gonna go see who I saw. It was the scandal, right? The scandal or the so you can.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Anyway, I don't want to spoil it because you haven't seen it.
SPEAKER_03Maybe I okay. I'll I'll check that out. So anyway, um uh isn't the Voldemort. I think Voldemort always was the documentary that everybody was actually confessing that wow, I actually sat down and watched a documentary because documentaries were not cool to watch.
SPEAKER_01Of course not.
SPEAKER_03Um about the the two guys trying to make it into the NBA, make it from the hood into the NBA and their their journey, and it was you know, document this is when when documentaries like you literally had to have cameras on you non-stop before it was like the Kardashians type of thing. Right, you know, and like they recorded like on little handheld cameras, like footage of these two from the time they were kids to getting into college to play college basketball and hoop rooms. It was just such an amazing film. And it lost in the best documentary category. And it did. Yes. Uh and everybody was just shocked. They're like, how did like that was that was something that it could have been nominated for best picture of the year, not just documentary? Right, right. Because of the yeah, the story basically. And people were shocked that uh yeah, but so every every year when the documentary category came, I'm like, man, I wonder if Hoop Dreams could win it today.
SPEAKER_00Did um did either of those guys make it into the MBA?
SPEAKER_03No, they didn't. They didn't. Uh one of them had uh repeated knee injuries in college, and then the other one, he just never made the cut after after college. So and he and I think his background was a little more like you know, a lot more drugs and stuff, and his dad was a drug addict, and you know, all the yeah, and there was like the the backstory, which which is what made the movie so amazing. And I don't even like basketball. It was so good. Wow. Uh and then the number 10 movie was Jim Carrey's The Mask, which was his follow-up to Ace Ventura.

SPEAKER_00I it was like a plane crash and then a terrorist attack. I mean, this just doesn't happen at a hospital.
SPEAKER_01Those things, all those things. They're getting crazy. This is a disaster point. Like I wouldn't want to go to that hospital. Yeah, I would never go there. It's like a walk in disaster movie. No wonder they have so much turnover every season. No wonder there's so much storyline. Yes, they're constantly getting.

SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah. Because it's the only time you had ice.
SPEAKER_00Hockey and swimming. Do you have to get up too early for those two? Too early. There's a lot of. Or stay up too late for hockey. I always think about you.

SPEAKER_00Not like I'm not up that late anyway, but playing hockey that late. But playing hockey that late's pretty good.

SPEAKER_03Well, I'm in retirement right now, so I don't know if I'll unretire anytime soon. Who knows? I don't say never. I don't foresee myself unretiring. It's a 50 50 plus league. Speaking of s of sports.

Uh Hulk Hogan signed with the World Championship Wrestling, not the the one you're thinking of, the WWE was. Yeah, but this was a precursor. So he was just getting into it. Just a baby. Just a baby. SPEAKER_03Did you ever watch the McMahon uh documentary on Netflix? It's on Netflix. And it's it's like I think four parts. And they go through the whole relationship of how him and Hulk, you know, and their dispute when you know he left the WWF to go to that, do that, and then how they rekindled their friendship and stuff. And it was just wow. It yeah, so all of that's in it's in the McMahon documentary. I'm I'm not a wrestling person by any means, not a fan. It doesn't, you know, I when when I was like, you know, 11, it was cool, but you know.

SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh then I grew up. Uh so grew out of 12. Yeah. So seeing, but I remember you know watching WWF when I was a kid and and stuff and knowing it was fake then, too. Um but I yeah, I'm not into wrestling, but definitely it's a good, you know, good documentary, a lot of interviews with with Jim McMahon. Right. Not Jim McMahon, what was his name?

SPEAKER_01Um now you had mentioned the uh that in your memory that there was a baseball strike. Um that this is the actual year the baseball strike occurred, uh, where uh it started August 12th and it canceled the World Series.
SPEAKER_03Right, the rest of the season was a good thing.
SPEAKER_01The rest of the season they were just canceled. They said, Okay, well then we're canceling the World Series, screw you. And so there wasn't a World Series that year. Yep. That was that one. Right, right. Um the X Games had their inaugural ESPN launch. Oh my gosh. Um X Games, everything. Um, yeah, every grunge uh sport you could think of was in these X Games. Um and then the uh golf channel, because you know, we needed the uh necessity of 24-hour coverage of golf. Of golf.

SPEAKER_00Sometimes it's nice just stick it on in the background.
SPEAKER_01There's Arnold Palmer taking a sleep. I would almost think that that would put me asleep the way they talk. And they think, and the announcers are not like right on top of the golfers, but they feel they have to whisper the whole time. And they're not really like they're not broadcasting to them. They're not they always seem to have to. He's uh he's stepping up to my pairs. He's gonna get here. Like, Jesus Christ, you're on, you gotta, they are always on like the 18th hole, like they're always at the very end, right? And for some strange reason, they jump to these coverages. And I always remembered watching it with my grandfather because he loved golf. Like he was always golf, golf, golf. So he always had that going, and whenever there was one on. And I always remembered they would show the drives, right? And the drives would be okay, they're on the guy, then the ball, they follow the ball up into the sky, and then it's gone in the sky, it's just gone because it's a white ball against a somewhat white background, and you're like, What the hell am I watching here? And then all of a sudden it would just land, and they're like, Oh, and there it is. I just I didn't get it. I didn't get it. It was as a kid, it was just like, Why are we what's what are we watching here? This is insane. So I was watching magic happen, basic magic. Magic. And then, of course, you also mentioned the OJ Simpson one, which is what I was gonna finish on. Because do you remember where you were when you saw this happening? Like, did you remember seeing this on television when they were broadcasting it?
SPEAKER_03Only the um the chase. The chase, that's yeah, the chase, that was the whole thing. Because that was what was the first thing that was like, oh, what's what's going on? What the heck is happening?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then they had and it wasn't like a super fast chase, like he wasn't trying to get away from anything, it just seemed like it was just like, Well, I'm just gonna keep driving here, and then why were they even chasing him down if it wasn't a high speed chase?
SPEAKER_00It was his friend who was driving.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, um Al Cowl.
SPEAKER_00It was a semi-hostage situation.
SPEAKER_01Was it though? Because yeah, when they finally stopped, they just arrested him.
SPEAKER_00But he had a gun and he, I think he was threatening to kill himself, and so they're talking to him the whole way as if it's a hostage situation. Do you know what I mean? So they're like trying to negotiate with him, and they're just like, you know, if you pull over, you know, we can work this all out, blah, blah, blah. And his friends like begging with him, just let me pull over, don't kill yourself, blah blah blah, all the stuff. And they were able to negotiate him to the house. And uh, yeah, that was crazy.
SPEAKER_03Where does Cato come into this? That's at the end. That's the trial. Oh, he oh, he was like just he was in the trial.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, supposedly he was the pool boy who was who had heard things happening in the back. Yeah, he lived in the guest house. He actually lived in the guest house. Yeah, that's right. I got it. But that's even later because that that trial didn't start until next couple years, I think, next year. Yeah. And when we hit that, we can talk about the trial. Yeah. Yeah, because every single one of them had like there's a whole bunch that um if you win the bracket thing and challenge for that league, you get free crap. Like some of them are like two tickets to some whatever game or something like that. But some of them was actually like um ace hardware had something, and then you could win some ace hardware crap. I was like, oh, cool, cool. So I decided whatever it was all free. So yeah. I am actually on the discipline. So turn the volume off. Here we go. We're gonna have to spin again. It's 83. Okay. Go.
