1985. Dave, I'm surprised you made it to recording tonight because taxes are due tomorrow. Dave is notorious for being the last-minute tax filer.
SPEAKER_02I'm the Homer Simpson of balling it up and just throwing stamps on it.
SPEAKER_00Get out. I'm shocked.
SPEAKER_02Well, so it's it's just because I really don't want to have to pay every time, and I always have to pay. I'm just so sick of putting money after money.
SPEAKER_03So every every year on the 14th, Dave's like, I'm too busy, I can't game tonight, or I can't play tonight. We're doing taxes. We're going right to the line. But there's a lot.
SPEAKER_02Well, okay, but there's all it's really involved. So it's just, you know, getting everything into QuickBooks, but it's are the uh the turbo tax and uh we have donations. We do trap turbo tax. Right, I know. You guys are are ahead of time. Just kind of keep putting it off and putting it off. And yeah, we kind of get caught. We got ours done last weekend. We got caught on the little topic. I was supposed to do it last weekend, but yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Dude, I'm like February. I got it down.
SPEAKER_03You're the Ned. When I was single, oh my gosh, yeah. Like as soon as I got yeah, my taxes. Yeah, my WQ is like boom, my taxes were done or first week of February. I would be just done with it. I'm like, I did not like lingering it on it.
SPEAKER_02Well you had to fill it out on the paper, right? Like then it was we actually really had to do it. Actually and mail it in and you know send it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Way before the intranet. Yes. The intra web.
SPEAKER_00Then if you if you get a refund, you get it fast because you're ahead of everybody else.
SPEAKER_02Right, right. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if you owe, obviously. Yeah, wait till the last minute.
SPEAKER_02Just pay for the last pay at the last moment.
SPEAKER_03Yes. We're just offering extension.
SPEAKER_02Oh, sure. You can do that.
SPEAKER_03You still have to pay the amount, right? You still have to pay it, yeah. On that day.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's a big scam anyway.
SPEAKER_03Taxes, man. The tax man. Oh. The government. We don't talk about government sometimes. No, no. Okay.
SPEAKER_02So I'm still streaking. I've injured myself again this weekend.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't so bad that guy said you were streaking. I had to be a little bit more. That's what it sounded like.
SPEAKER_03That's exactly what it sounded like, Joanne.
SPEAKER_02Let's rewind a little bit. I have continued my streaking. Were you the naked guy in Chantilly that was robbing all those houses? That was me. Yes. The streaky naked guy. They caught him actually. I didn't want to put it out there, but yes, I looked at the book.
SPEAKER_00Is that for real?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, or it was in Centerville. Centerville, Virginia. There was back over was it spring break-ish or something like that? A couple weeks ago. There was a guy who was naked breaking into people's houses and like robbing them. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Get out. Why naked? That's a tricky.
SPEAKER_03I have no idea. But I saw the picture of the guy and I was like, you uh yeah, why naked? Why? No. Why? Why just cover that up? Cover it all up. Head to toe. So your streak of being injured, Dave.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. So I've I've again, it wasn't as horrible as normal ones, but yeah, I kind of came down on my foot uh with the shovels. So yeah. Okay. Did you like lose a toe or anything? We planted all of Carn's uh planting. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, we separated everything. Yeah, my wife was very happy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, did you see our hostas when you walked up?
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, those are amazing.
SPEAKER_03Um you obviously weren't looking very close because the deer ate them last night.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you're kidding me. Really? All of them?
SPEAKER_03No, but a good portion.
SPEAKER_02I remember seeing on the way out the other uh last time.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I should have. Yeah, I should have got up when you came in. I forgot. Oh crap. Oh, we'll go. Oh, hold on, hold on. Field trip. Let's go look. Oh, let's go. Where's the camera? We do a live feed here.
SPEAKER_00You can you can do that for our social media.
SPEAKER_02Yes, okay. Yes, perfect. I'll get that done for shots of the of the eating hostages. Well, that sucks because we got ours out, but we put uh the deer spray on it. The deer.
SPEAKER_03We were out of deer spray. Oh, that's why. So we only had a little bit left in the bottle, and apparently Karin sprayed whatever she had. Of course, now that's the first thing on the shopping list is cayenne works too.
SPEAKER_02Tell me more about this deer spray. So basically, it um it has a strong pungent smell to it. Like urine. Yeah, but the stuff that we get is actually uh spicy. Like it has spices and it smells almost like a spicy deer spray. It smells like an autumn uh like a concoction. Does it have paprika? It has I don't want exactly the happiest spice in the entire one. I will get you the name of it and um what's in it for our corrections next time. That's okay. I know. I would like it texted to the code. I would imagine it's just a yeah, because it's a it's a good one and it's a concentrate. Uh it's not cheap, but it is a concentrate, so it goes a while. It's very focused. It's very focused. It concentrates hard. It concentrates amazingly. And um it it works great when it's on, and it's an oil base, so it'll stay on after it rains for a little while. You know, it'll stay on for a little while. But yeah. But yeah, so otter's what is this horticulturing? Yeah, now it's gardening uh 1010101. In 1985. Um yeah, so uh yeah, so that's works works out. Yeah, we get we did a lot of planning. I gotcha. Those all separated to like 16 plants. It was in some coverage. I sent you a picture of a uh actually I sent it to Carn. I didn't add it to you, but um I didn't I knew you wouldn't be interested. Um Plants and blobs. Um I just dig holes and throw them in. I don't really uh concentrate. You don't care for them and nurture them? No, I don't you she was watered them the other day. Say goodnight to them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you gotta do that.
SPEAKER_02I did the watering. I don't have to uh talk to them. But um but they did they turned out well. They look great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I see Dave standing there with the hose. Well, I'm sure you've all been to County, right? Yes, spread them off. Turn them off exactly.
SPEAKER_00Is that a prison?
SPEAKER_03It's a line from Pulp Fiction. It's when it's when Jules and um uh oh my god, Travolta's character. Vincent Vega uh show up to Quentin Tarantino's house with Marvin Marvin. Yeah, and the car where he blew his head off.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_03And then you had to hose him off. Right, and he hosed him off in the backyard with because they were all covered in blood and stopped from cleaning up, and he goes, I'm sure you guys have all been to counties. Gotcha, gotcha. Or actually, no, that was the wolf that said that one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the wolf said it, but uh Quentin.
SPEAKER_03He was standing there, yeah, spraying him with spraying him with the hose. Joanne, what did you what did you uh you said you had you had to do? He had a couple openings. You had some opening stuff.
SPEAKER_00So much. Oh, geez.
SPEAKER_03Okay, we'll cut it in half.
SPEAKER_00Here we go. This weekend I was in Florida.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Okay. Did you go to Disney again?
SPEAKER_00No. I went for my nephew's and his fiance's bridal shower.
SPEAKER_02And my sister-in-law's Mahjong friends.
SPEAKER_00Oh, wow, wow. Very lovely. Very lovely. Nice. We went, we got they will they have a membership to this boat club where you like pay a monthly fee and you get a boat anytime you want.
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's incredible.
SPEAKER_00It's freaking amazing and it's not expensive. And they have a whole bunch of different types of boats you can rent.
SPEAKER_02Right. Oh wow, was the party mahjong themed?
SPEAKER_00Uh no, but she did get as a gift a whole mahjong set and some uh mahjong accoutrement. Of course. So she's she has not played before. So she's all set up.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00She's all said she's gonna get her friends together.
SPEAKER_02Amazing.
SPEAKER_00I used to play it on my computer, but it was just a matching game.
SPEAKER_03It wasn't really it wasn't playing against anybody.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I I know nothing about it. So I don't either.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. We'll see. So anyway, we went out on the little boat.
SPEAKER_02Nice uh dinghy.
SPEAKER_00And no, it was like one of those pontoon boats. It was so nice to have a leather seat.
SPEAKER_02The party boats, yeah, slow movers.
SPEAKER_00So so nice. Nice, sweet. And we went up and down the intercoastal waterway in Tampa and we saw dolphins and we saw a dolphin catch a fish. Oh wow, and it was so cool because it wasn't very busy. So we could like if we spotted a dolphin, we just kind of went over to look at the dolphin, and the water in parts is so shallow, like we could follow them as they were moving. It was very cool.
SPEAKER_03And where we went the boat glass bottom, could you see through the bottom?
SPEAKER_00No, no, that would have been super cool. That would have been and the place where he got the boat from was in clear water, so I saw Scientologists. Oh, they look like normal people.
SPEAKER_02What? Really? They do. Wow. I thought they had alien antennas. Right.
SPEAKER_03I thought they walked around with like little name tags that say hello my name is. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they do do that, and they're all wearing like suits and ties, and the women have like pantsuits with sweaters. Like it's like 80 some degrees, and they're walking around.
SPEAKER_02That's crazy. It's because they don't have any sweat glance.
SPEAKER_03You didn't know that. Did you just start yell yelling clear, clear?
SPEAKER_00No, I should have. Should have. That would have been so bad. But have you have you seen these TikTok videos? These kids.
SPEAKER_02I've heard of the TikTok. I've heard of TikTok before. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So there's this challenge. Uh oh. And I'm assuming it's at the Scientology Center in Hollywood. Okay. Where you just you go to it and you start running through the halls of the Scientology Center to see how far in you can get before they kick you out. It's a trend. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Wow. I thought you were going to say see how far they can get in before they're captured. Before they're taken. He's taken below. Before they're just sucked instairs. Never to be seen or heard of again.
SPEAKER_02That's why we're going through so many scenes lately.
SPEAKER_00The one I just saw was supposedly the longest one that has ever been done. Yes. And he's running, his friends running after him with the video. And he turns the corner and disappears, and his friend gets caught. So I mean, I don't know what happened to the first time.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, he's he's gone. He's gone. He's part of the industry on the call. They made him into a chair, I think. Right.
SPEAKER_00Probably. That was my exciting news. It's cool. Amazing.
SPEAKER_02Okay. That's so cool. I'm glad you didn't know that. That's their whole center.
SPEAKER_00I'm glad that's their whole center, right? In Clearwater. That's like where it's that's the city. Is that the big camp?
SPEAKER_01Is that the big camp? Yeah, that's their town. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So they came and they um bought up a whole bunch of buildings. They bought this old Howard Johnson restaurant hotel to make into like a conference center. And it was supposed to be like Scientology Center.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_00And uh yeah, so they've got to be a little bit more.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, whoosh.
SPEAKER_00I know it was touch and go there for a little while.
SPEAKER_02We were a little too close. Little close, a little close.
SPEAKER_00We did not roll down the windows, so I think that's what saved us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, don't breathe the dream air they breathe. No breathing. Oh my god. Scientology. I'm sure they put something into the air. Yeah, we gotta keep separate. It's like the smell they put in pro propane so you can actually smell it. It doesn't actually smell like propane. They add the smell so you know it's a gas leak. Right. Or when you're in Hershey and you smell the chocolate everywhere. It's like, oh my God, everywhere I know, right? Oh, getting pumped out of the light posts and stuff. It's like near paper mill. Same scenario.
SPEAKER_03What else do you got, Joanne?
SPEAKER_00That's all that's all for my own. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03That was a ton of stuff. That was a big floral. Yeah, so that was a lot. Okay, my a lot. My I had I had very similar a lot this weekend. Yes. Oh, yay. I watched not one, uh-oh, but two movies from my list of movies that I should probably sit down and watch. Yes. That I had never watched. I watched Dances with Wolves.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you did? And I liked it.
SPEAKER_03Yes. I was like, okay, I totally see how this was picture of the year. It won, it was nominated for something like 12 Oscars and it won seven. Yeah, it was a lot of uh visual too. Yeah, they won like, yeah, the cinematography was amazing. Right? Yeah. The spread. I mean, that the but you know, the landscape tells the story itself. I mean, you just have to turn the camera on, you know, because it's just beautiful scenery in it. Um, so yeah, so I I watched Answers with Wolves. I split that over, I think it was like Thursday night, Friday night. Right. And I I enjoyed it. I was like, okay, I totally get it. So that got me all amped up, and I'm like, okay, well, let's go into another Oscar-winning film that I've never seen that I should have should have watched, which was Braveheart.
SPEAKER_02You've never seen Braveheart.
SPEAKER_03I have never seen Braveheart. Really? And I'm watching this going, this was an Oscar film? This is almost comical at some points, where I'm like, I I just see him as, you know, lethal weapon, you know, like crazy-eyed Mel Gibson. I was like, how did this win best picture when it's almost laughable at points? Have you seen the patriot? I have not watched the picture. Is that Kevin Costner's? That's Mel Gibson, too. Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he plays Is it Murdoch?
SPEAKER_03Is that the guy from Lethal Weapons? Yes. Murdoch? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um no wait, that's the detective. Oh, that is. What is his what is Murtaugh? Murtaugh is the detective.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um I don't know. Gibbs.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Gibbs? Gibbs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03His name was Gibbs. Okay, whatever. Anyway. Yeah. I don't know. So the Patriot. Yes. Yeah. So that's the next one most like that watch. Well, that's like the Brave.
SPEAKER_02It'll be like the Braveheart. You'll see the same scenarios in it because that's that same role that he plays in it. And yeah, the big hero.
SPEAKER_00And then watch him in Hamlet. Yes, then too.
SPEAKER_02That's another way.
SPEAKER_03That's even more ridiculous. That's kind of I was very underwhelmed with Braveheart because I've known so many people over the years that are like, oh, Braveheart, fucking great movie. And I'm like, Yeah. Okay, I'll get to it eventually. And then when I did, I'm like, I was almost I was only in the first 30 to 40 minutes and I was like saying to myself, this was an Oscar-winning film. Right.
SPEAKER_00Was it just too old?
SPEAKER_02I i I guess it just didn't hold up well because yeah, but it's a theme, but it's a time piece, right? It's not if it was like let's say it was showing modern time or something like that, right? And then it didn't date itself because it was that old, I'd say, okay, but they actually did this one from the time period. So it was kind of like a lot of people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you know how it's filmed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it still was in that kind of realistic mode. It wasn't like they did a lot of CGI or anything with it.
SPEAKER_03Right. Well, actually, the troops, I and I've known this story for years. When Oh, yeah, and the big battle where he gives the big speech, it's in the middle of the movie. I thought that was like the ending. Like it's in an alley, that's when it's like, oh, he pumps the crowd up and gets them all going, and then they have this big gigantic battle, and then the movie's over. That's what I thought it was leading up to. And then halfway through it, it gets to that point. I'm like, wait, this is happening already? There's still another hour and 15 minutes left. What the hell are they gonna do after this? Well, how are they gonna top this? After this battle, what are they gonna do? Right. Um, yeah, and even points in that there was you know stuff that was just silly, comical, like to me, I would just laughable, like, okay, yeah. And I I just kept waiting for the Wilhelm scream. Whaaaaa! It's in there. It's in dances with wolves. It is in when she shoots the guy from the other Indian tribe that's coming into their camp, uh-huh, and you know, his the one who he ends up marrying she she's in the tent with these other women and she has a gun, and the the Indian guy rips the door open and he looks in and she's got the gun holding it, and she squeezes the trigger and blows him away, and he goes, It's the well-known scream. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_02That's good. I love hearing it too, because it's just like, oh, cool. Yeah. So and they only do it once in the movie. Like they over.
SPEAKER_03They don't right.
SPEAKER_02You you hear it's all Indiana Jones ones. It's just the one guy who falls off a train or off the cliff or the bridge, or it's just the one. You only get one. So you gotta pick and choose. You gotta make sure it's in the right spot. It's gotta be it's gotta be magical when it happens.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so you're saying, what did you say? The postman? No, that was the Kevin Costner one. What did you say? Patriot. The Patriot. Yeah, that's one on Gibson. I should watch or shouldn't watch.
SPEAKER_02I would say you're not gonna like it because it's more like Braveheart. Yeah, it's kind of just like it. But yeah, so that's kind of that same theme. All right. Okay. But 1776 scenario. Gotcha. Okay. Do you have any corrections, Dave? I have a couple. Okay. Um we were talking about Jennifer Lawrence, and you had said, well, what has she done lately? Well, she's actually been in tons of crap. Right. Yeah. So 2016 we mentioned was was passengers in that time. That's the one working What's up in the gotcha passengers. Right. Yeah. And then there was 2019 where she was with the X-Men in Dark Phoenix. Well, I mean, she was on makeup and the X-Men machines. That was her too. Okay. And then uh 2021 she did Don't Look Up, which was on Netflix.
SPEAKER_03With everybody in it. Leo DiCaprio. The Leo. We had to mention the Leo, right? Yeah. Of course. Got to get the DiCaprio.
SPEAKER_02DiCaprio reference. And then in 2023 she did No Hard Feelings, which was about her and some I don't know, I can't remember how that all played feelings. Yeah, it was kind of a weird rom-com scenario. Gotcha. I never saw it.
SPEAKER_03Join, do you watch Secret Millionaire on Netflix?
SPEAKER_00No, what is that?
SPEAKER_03Oh, season two star uh comes out tomorrow. Um Secret Millionaire. Secret Millionaire. It's like this house where they have and they have all these people in it and they're competing for the million dollar prize, but they each have like this wooden box in their room, and one of them randomly gets designated as the millionaire, and then they have to suss them out and see who who it is and try to figure out you know who the millionaire is, and then they go in and like can evict person by saying, you know, I think you're the millionaire, and then if you know, and then they reveal if they are or they're not, and then if they don't get caught, then they get to give the money to someone else. And the whole point is at the end of the show you want the money back in your box by the end of the show.
SPEAKER_00I started watching it and I got through I think two episodes and I found it boring.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. That's how I felt about um Temptation Island. Oh did you watch Temptation Island season one? No.
SPEAKER_00I watched it not the most recent iteration of the.
SPEAKER_03There's only two uh seasons.
SPEAKER_00No, it came out a long time ago.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, the newer iteration, which season one that came out last year, I watched that and same thing. I got in halfway through the second episode, I'm like, this is just so boring, I just can't can't.
SPEAKER_00So you just can't can't.
SPEAKER_03I just can't can't.
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes we can't like all of the realities. I know.
SPEAKER_02Go figure. If you want to, well, Dave does. Go figure. That's too lowbrow for Dave. Wow. Oh my god. The big brothers are always, always a torture.
SPEAKER_00I am loving the Real Housewives of Rhode Island, though.
SPEAKER_03I didn't even know that was a thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it is so good. It's with Ashley Eye from The Bachelorette. She's one of the people.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, of course. She was one of my favorites. Yeah, she's great.
SPEAKER_00It's like full on right away.
SPEAKER_03I've never watched A Bachelor or Bachelorette.
SPEAKER_00Really? Well, you might have missed your chance because it's probably never coming back. No, oh, after the scandal.
SPEAKER_02The scandal scandal. So we also had a Tom Hardy confusion situation where you thought it was the Hurley shirt. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01At Hurley.
SPEAKER_02Hurley is the name of the shirt. H-U-R-L-E-Y is the name of the shirt. Whatever. And it was released in 1999. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So there you go. Gotcha. Cool.
SPEAKER_00I was close. All right.
SPEAKER_03Are we ready to get into this this year? I am. All right. 1995. 85. I'm starting with innovations. Yes. These were, I was actually, when I saw the list of the stuff from that year, I was like, oh wow, that's oh wow. That's nice. Uh it marked the launch of Microsoft Windows 1.0. Oh, nice. The original was in 1985. The Nintendo NES system came out in North America. Yep. The first release. Um it was the introduction of domain names because you on the internet you to go to websites, you would have to type in the IP address. Yes. And then in 1985, they actually uh names gave it where you could pick a domain name and have it go to that instead of typing in, you know, one dot one six. So you had to know the number. Right.
SPEAKER_00That's did we have the internet?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So technically it was a combination of universities and and uh large servers that were connected to each other. Yeah. And so yeah, they communicated just via IP address. Right. But some of those IP addresses were internal to the university. So by doing that, you could do the domain names, which was a lot of what uh you saw the EDU, which is the education uh scenario of the domain.
SPEAKER_03Yep. In the orgs. Also the Sony Discman came out. The first portable CD player. Yeah, I guess that's the same thing. Oh, that was the yellow mode. Yeah, that was the one that's sealed so you didn't get water in it.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03You could throw it in a pool and it would be okay.
SPEAKER_02Mainly it was so I didn't sweat all in it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So Sony Discman, that was you know, stepping up from the Walkman to the Discman. Uh early consumer laser printers. Oh. Because everything up to that point was just dot matrix or daisy wheel. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Those were loud.
SPEAKER_03And it would take forever to print. Super freaking loud.
SPEAKER_01So loud.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yes. Like somebody grinding on a stone or to print you out a sign that says Happy Birthday.
SPEAKER_02And it still had the paper that had the little nubs on the side that you had to read.
SPEAKER_03But you had to tear off the little track nubs. Um also it was the the widespread adoption of cellular phones, like the first bricks. Oh, perfect. It was like you know, the gray one with the little tiny black antenna on it.
SPEAKER_00So much. Yeah, there was a lot.
SPEAKER_03Big, big, big. Um the hold on, let me see. What was it? Oh, and in computer computing advances, the Amiga 1000 was introduced as a multimedia powerhouse. And the 2400 baud modems increased data transfer speeds. 2400 when they went to 2400.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah. I remember having a 1200 and uh yeah, it was kind of what would we be at now? It's not even it isn't even a ball. It's not a ball rate. Because baud rates aren't done that way, and yeah, so it's kind of a weird now. It's it's measured.
SPEAKER_03I'm sure there's some sort of conversion out there to explain what's the difference between.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, times 12 or times 200 uh for baud rate. Yeah, you could probably figure it out.
SPEAKER_03There's got to be somebody that's figured that out.
SPEAKER_02Of course, I'm sure. I'm sure a website.

SPEAKER_03Um the magnetic strips on credit cards became standard, replacing the manual imprint machines. Oh, the numbers on them. Yeah, well, you had to actually piece of paper in and run it over and then sign it and write on it. We were definitely getting out of noisy items that year, weren't we? It's right. So nice. So nice. Made everything quieter. Fax machines, modern fax machines began appearing in offices for quick document trans uh transmissions. Nice. Yeah, you you could yeah, every yeah. You could used to be able fax machines were, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That was like, oh my god, you could fax you can send this file.
SPEAKER_02I can send a whole image uh of of of paperwork to somebody. To somebody, yeah. And another phone.
SPEAKER_03On the other side, yeah, on the other side of the phone.
SPEAKER_02They just had to have a fax machine too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. Crazy fax machines.
SPEAKER_02And they would did it on the weird ass paper. It wasn't actually like oh yeah. It was like it was like a wax paper-y kind of photosensitive. So it had to be burnt into it. Right. It was burnt into it. And so the paper was weird, different. You could read it and you had the information, which was great, but it wasn't like you could submit it for anything. Like you could.
SPEAKER_03It came off that huge roll, so the paper was always arched. And it was arched, and so you had to like almost scroll through it.
SPEAKER_02Like the yes, it all rolled back up when it finally finished printing.
SPEAKER_03Uh the new Coke came out. This was the when they when they made the change in April of 85.
SPEAKER_00Faded day.
SPEAKER_03It was the failed marketing innovation that led to the swift return of classic Coke. Yes. Which made it even more effective to sell more Coke. Exactly. So yeah, new Coke came out. I remember New Coke.
SPEAKER_00What did it taste like?
SPEAKER_03Do you remember? Yeah, yeah. It totally tasted different. Did it? I mean, it's still had a Coke twinge to it. Right. But so a couple years ago, when Stranger Things, I think season three came out, um, they did a yeah, and they put them back in stores and they were labeled in Stranger Things Coke cans, and it was the origin or it was the new Coke recipe.
SPEAKER_02I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. I I had to hunt them down. Like I I finally found them like at a Dollar General or something like that because I couldn't find them at any grocery stores or Walmart or anywhere. And they I walked into a dollar general and they had like a little cooler there, and there was like it was stocked, and I'm like, all right, I'm buying like four or five. Wow.

SPEAKER_00I don't remember the taste of it at all. No, I can't.
SPEAKER_02I remember Crystal Pepsi when they had the Crystal Pepsi. I do remember that. Yeah. Of course I was 15. I wasn't actually making notes like that.
SPEAKER_03Right. And and not to step on Joanne's movies, uh, but Back to the Future was that year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yes. Another innovation was the DeLorean time machine. So yeah, I have to remember that. Absolutely. But DeLorean passed me on the way home today. Really? Did it really? It was so freaked out. Yeah, they do make them now. Yeah, they've been putting them out again. Um, but uh well they have for years.
SPEAKER_03They they they produce like a hundred or a hundred and fifty a year or something like that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's amazing.
SPEAKER_03It is. Yeah. And did you know that when DeLorean went to jail, it was or he never went, got convicted on the whole thing of supposedly trying to sell drugs to you know make money for his company. He actually never got convicted and never went to jail for that. Wow. Yeah, there's a there's a good documentary on it. Uh I watched, and it was like how DeLorean was, but it ruined his name, just the fact that the case was filed against him and it bankrupted the company and his you know. And that's why it was and it tarnished the name and the cars just kind of disappeared, but then they kept building like yeah, like about 100 or 150 yards.
SPEAKER_02It's not exactly easy to get in and out of parking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly with the Goldwing Doors. The doors going straight up like that. So uh the first Blockbuster video opened. Oh my goodness. The whole entertainment market. Yes, and spend Friday nights. Going to Blockbuster Video and looking down the wall and hoping that your movie was there, especially under the new release, because they would have like 50,000 copies of it. Yes. And they would all be gone and rented. Yeah. Like, damn it, I wanted to watch The Breakfast Club.
SPEAKER_02Or sitting waiting for someone to return it and make it and check into the street.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, you could stand at the like the old arrows. Exactly. Was that ghost? Was that ghost? I just I wanted to check. That's the Betamax version? No, I needed a VHS. I need a VHS version. I need a VHS version. Actually, the whole reason I bought a Betamax machine was because I could get the movies. They'd be easier to get. I walked in and it was always there. Like I didn't have to wait for a VHS copy. It was like, oh yeah. And the quality was technically better on a Betamax. It was supposed to. And yeah, it's better video, better, but for some reason VHS won the war. Big VHS, yes.
SPEAKER_00We had a beta. That my dad was all about like this is the best one, the quality of blah, blah, blah. We had it forever.
SPEAKER_03I still have mine. It still works. Yes.

But the the album Songs from the Big Chair, I listened to that album over and over and over and over non-stop all summer long that year. Right. This is an underrated song from that one.
SPEAKER_02Underrated? Yeah, like you were like, it didn't get played, but you were like, that why isn't that why are they playing that one?
SPEAKER_03Uh we'll see, I'd have to go back and listen to the record again. I haven't listened to it in like a couple weeks. So um in a couple weeks.

SPEAKER_03He hasn't put it in as uh Disman and it also had it also had Shout as a single and Head Over Heels was another single off that record. So it that record had three singles that were hits, and they got all the MTV airplay that summer, and I was playing that CD non-stop. CD, yeah. Non-stop. Uh Dire Straits, Money for Nothing was 85, uh which he wrote.
SPEAKER_02And that's kind of their second wind, weren't they? Dire Straits?
SPEAKER_03Because Dire Straits was huge in the 70s. Yes, they had yeah with Sultan Swing. Yeah, they were already an established band.
SPEAKER_02And then turn around and MTV comes, and then they had a whole resurgence. Yeah, it's a lot of people.
SPEAKER_03Because they were making fun of MTV. Yeah, big time. Because not Money for Nothing was a song that he wrote about making fun of what he was seeing on MTV. Yeah. And so so and MTV ate it up, and it was like, wow. So yeah. So Mark Knoffler laughed all the way to the bank on that one. I just made fun of you and you're gonna air my video non-stop. Are you kidding me? Exactly. Um Madonna's Crazy for You.

SPEAKER_03I absolutely love that song. And I I just found out within the past couple years, this blew my mind and then made complete sense. Daryl Hall wrote the song from Holland O's. So they're just making money, hand over fist. Daryl Hall has said, even, and I've heard this in recent, you know, more recent times, that he goes that he loves that that was a hit for Paul Young because every time he walks to his mailbox and gets that check, that royalty check for that.
SPEAKER_02And they still get them.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, because it still gets airplayed on the whole 80s channel. And like that was a huge hit. And then you got the XM. Right. And it's getting played. And but I didn't know that Daryl Hall wrote the song. And I was like, I've been a fan of that song in Paul Young's since 85 when it came out. And to find out, I was like, I was like, oh wow. And then when you listen to the songwriting, you're like, that is total Daryl Hall. That is a total.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I can and I think the moral of this podcast is become a songwriter.

They were done, they were just wrapping up the record. And then Philip Bailey went to him and said, Hey, you know what? We should do a song together. And like just do something that's like can't be upbeat. And yeah, because and Easy Lover was such a like you know 50s kind of steel, like just a fun, doo-whoppy song. And you know, yeah. And Phil Collins was like, sure, let's do it. And he laid down the drum tracks, and then they did the and they wrote Easy Lover, and it was that did have good drums.

SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was from the Back to the Future Soundtrack. There was a lot of soundtrack stuff that um because then another one of my top ten favorite songs of all time. And this band had already established themselves and they had huge hits and or they're already having hits and stuff. And this one, but this one catapulted them to the next level. Okay. Simple Minds, Don't You Forget About Me.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Once I was like, on the Breakfast Club soundtrack.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And that blew up. Now here's the story on Don't You Forget About Me. Okay. So Simple Minds, Tim Kerr, the lead singer in the band, they write their own songs. They don't, you know, go outside the box looking for outside help. Right. This song came along. So the song was already written and it came to them. And they pitched it and they were like, Do you can will you guys do the song? And Tim Kerr was like, No, we only do our songs that we write. We don't do covers or do other people's material. Wow. So Chrissy Hind of the Pretenders was dating Tim Kerr at the time, and she talked him into it and said, This song is fantastic. You've got to look at the bigger picture of this. You're getting a chance to break into American movie soundtrack and get a song on a movie soundtrack. And this song is fantastic. You guys should totally do this. And turn stop. So Christy Hines of the Pretenders talked him in for them to go into the studio, and they literally spent one day in the studio recording that track. There was no one around.
SPEAKER_02That's right.
SPEAKER_03Because the band was still against it, and they were just like, let's just get it over with. Get it and like so they just threw it together and it was a throwaway track for them because they didn't want to do it in the first place. And but then they did, and it became now the song of a generation. Yes, exactly. And hopefully you opened up, you know, all the other things.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, now they have to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But they have such a deep catalog of other hits too. Right.
SPEAKER_02But the one song you hate and you keep having to play it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It would almost be like, but honestly, I think that's most musicians with their big hits. Really? Oh, because they have to keep playing in the same way. Radiohead will not play creep anymore. They refuse to, and that was their big song. And they refused to play it live. They just did a summer or a uh European tour a couple months back before the end of the year, and they did there was like 20 some shows and they didn't play creep once. And they're like, nope, we're not gonna do it.
SPEAKER_00No, so I think that's bad, but Taylor has two songs that she won't play. Okay, okay. It's because they make her really sad.

Um and then you mentioned the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out, but the games that were associated with that was the Super Mario Brothers Gauntlet and Ghost and Goblins, which is a pretty little gauntlet. Uh left to right one. And then you got um board games, uh Pictionary was the big one uh of the time. Um there's one called uh Axis and Allies, which was a large-scale World War II battle game, which kind of moved tanks and things around as a strategy game. But there was one called, I was laughing because I I skipped this one, but uh don't talk to strangers. Now, this was supposed to be educational for children to not, you know, to not talk to strangers. But it was actually aliens were the strangers. And I was reading the rules, and it's kind of funny because the strangers can actually abduct you, and the strangers were always in quotes, like strangers, like don't talk to strangers. But they were freaking aliens, and they were like what you would see is aliens, green uh giant grays and other grays. No, they weren't wearing suits and ties, it was just regular naked aliens out in there abducting children. Um, yeah, so we also had probing. Yeah, exactly. Um we had the Teddy. Michael Jackson or aliens? Oh, wait, I'm the Teddy Ruxpin, which was the uh world's first animatronic talking toy with the tape deck installed in its belly. Yes, yes, and told little stories and and read to you uh and put you to bed. Um the precursor to the Chucky doll, which was the my buddy doll. Okay. My buddy, you know, my buddy, my buddy, and he was uh yellow and red and blue. So yeah, it was all the good colors. And then um, I don't know if you had this, but uh the GI Joe USS flag was the largest place.

SPEAKER_02Seven and a half feet long. Now, if you got this for Christmas, like let's say you're the kid and your parents wrapped this thing and put it under the tree. You had to think that you had the best parents ever. Because this thing was huge. Ginormous. It was massive. It is one for what it was.
SPEAKER_03It is one of the most sought-after G.I. Joe toys because they didn't sell because they were so huge. And so the ones that they discontinued it. Yeah. And if you can find one like in a box, but thousands of dollars.

This was a cartoon adaptation that came out that was a cross of two animal characters into a plush. And the plush characters were the ones they were selling, but it was part of a show also. Okay. Um now these two characters that they mashed together were two animals, and an example would be the rhino key, which was a rhinoceros and a monkey. Oh, I was about thought you were gonna say rhinoceros and geese. And geese. Um don't know yet. Um, but here's my two real one fake. Um can you pick the the fake muzzle out of my combination?
