1990, another new decade! The death of hair metal and the rise of grunge rock. We'll also cover Innovations, Icons, Movies, Food, Music and the Current Events of that year. So, sit back and enjoy the show!
1990. Alright, I'm feeling a little off today. Really? And I'm it's just the stress of the end of the regular hockey season is closing in. And the Capitals right now are out of a playoff spot, fighting, trying to get into a playoff spot. And I'm I'm torn because very, you know, very rarely, like, you know, the there or not very rarely, but like uh every once in a while, they won't make it in the into the playoffs. And I am so relieved because I'm not stressed out over the playoffs and watching them go through the playoffs and struggle through the playoffs because I've been through it all with this team since I was like eight years old. And it just so I kind of almost want them to miss the playoffs, so I can just enjoy and watch the playoffs happen with the other team. Don't have an investment in it. Well, my ducks my ducks are doing well out west, so they're good, they should make the playoffs. But right, but it's no like necessary. Right. It's not my hometown team, local team thing. So I'm so I'm just a little off because the game's on right now. We're recording it, and as soon as we get done recording here, we're gonna go back and watch it. And um, because the the stats that I saw today were that if they win tonight, they still have a 15% chance of making it, but if they lose tonight, they're pretty much done. So anyway. So that yeah, I'm just I'm just a little like my my mind's in other places right now. I I've got to focus on the podcast. So I'm focusing on the podcast. 1990. March is not in 1990. Get out of the present. Exactly. Uh well, okay, so it's stay in the present, but then we'll get this. Saw this today that Travis Kelsey said on a podcast. I don't know if this was one with his brother or if it was a he was on someone else's podcast. But he said that 50 to 80 percent of the players in the NFL use cannabis. And they basically stopped taking it like two weeks before training camp starts.
SPEAKER_04So their P is so they're right calling them out.
SPEAKER_03But the thing is, he says that the NFL's not dinging players for cannabis use anymore. It has to be something, you know, like steroid or like a heavier thing. Yeah, because I mean cannabis now is you can get it in a gummy form.
SPEAKER_00Pretty legal.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like in in the state of Virginia, it's it's legal for recreational use above 21 years old. Right. So you can't really become quite common in a lot of states, like you know, California, and like you know, where you know it's it's all legal, and you know, so and he said, but yeah, he said 50 to 80 percent of the players use and they don't get dinged for it because it's yeah. So and then that made me oh go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I was saying where he probably said this um on the podcast last week, they showed a clip of Family Feud where he was one of the answers, along with Barack Obama, Willie Nelson, uh Tommy Chong.
SPEAKER_03So all pot smokers.
SPEAKER_00And they're like, How does Travis Kelsey find? And he's like, It's gotta be pot. It's got just I mean, everybody else like to smoke with, and he got like three votes blessed hard.
SPEAKER_03That's funny. Wow. So anyway, I but I thought about um like players like in the past, like Ricky Williams, when he played for the Dolphins, like he got kicked out of the league for because he couldn't stop smoking marijuana. Right. And by today's standards, that wouldn't even be an issue. And I'm like, that guy's career was basically ruined, yeah, ruined.
SPEAKER_04Got moved to the Dolphins, and then that was it after that.
SPEAKER_03That was it. And they cut him because same scenario. Right. He did he I don't think he did it on game day, but like he did it all the other times.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, and so but like think of him today. Like, what kind of career would he have had? Would he have been one of like the great running backs if he had you know in today's league?
SPEAKER_04Well, he'd definitely be laid back.
SPEAKER_03Definitely be very mellow. Very laid back again. He'd be okay if they lost. He's all right. Even at times, but it happens. We played. We'll play harder next time. Anyway. Um Yeah, so that was that was all my thoughts for the week. So, Julian, did you have anything to chickens? Chickens or chicken goose or best beef barbecue in downtown Fredericksburg, left of the traffic light.
SPEAKER_00I will not comment on our eating out experience.
SPEAKER_03No, is it that bad?
SPEAKER_00Because it is not a rave.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00However, someplace that sucks?
SPEAKER_04So tell us. Was it nice? It wasn't a good one, didn't happen. It's okay. You don't want to throw anyone under my bus. We get that.
SPEAKER_00But I won't name names, but yes. So it's it has three separate areas, this restaurant.
SPEAKER_04Bucky's. Bucky's is never bad.
SPEAKER_00They have the inside, which is fancy, right? The patio, which is casual. Fancy casual, same menu, same menu.
SPEAKER_03Collared shirt, no tie necessary. Right, right.
SPEAKER_00Probably, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, gotcha. Cat side is whatever. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00They just open and they have been there booked for months, right? Wow. But they have this garden, and this is how they build it. That it was a garden, and you eat under the twinkling lights, and with you know, kind of like family style. Oh, okay. So a group of us were like, yes, that's awesome. Let's do that because there are kids and they can play in the garden, and blah, blah, blah, blah. Let's just say I had five core changes that could be very easily made that would have elevated the experience from a picnic.
SPEAKER_04Oh, wow. Okay. Wow. So they well, they just opened too, right? There's always growing bases.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they've been open for like two months or so. Okay. That's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04Two months is always two months is you've got to correct that before two months.
SPEAKER_00They just have not thought I it's supposed to be like a less expensive option. With I'm guessing, zero work for them because we ate off of paper plates. We had our wine and paper cups.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to my life earlier this year. Maybe their dishwasher was in there. Maybe their dishwasher was broken.
SPEAKER_00We had to clean our own tables.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh, you bust your own table. Wow.
SPEAKER_00It was not as advertised. Let's just say that.
SPEAKER_04Okay, uh, but a restaurant going two months in that mode, people are still coming and spending money.
SPEAKER_00So to be fair, yes, it has been the winter.
SPEAKER_04That's true.
SPEAKER_00So I don't know how much business they've gotten for that particular outside, but we knew they were super busy.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_00We had heard rave reviews of the food. I mean, absolutely outstanding.
SPEAKER_04Maybe is it a different menu outside though?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Well, you're probably getting you're probably getting a smaller menu. Well, sending the place, tell me. Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_00It's a smaller menu, but they didn't they didn't explain it very well. It was like I get that. Choose this, choose this, but let's just say the names of the dishes were not in English. So you really didn't know what you were. There weren't like little description or anything. No. Well, that's in that's new. So I have high hopes for them that they will get it together for the outside or just don't offer the outside. All right. Because it really took away.
SPEAKER_03Did you leave a comment card? You should have.
SPEAKER_00No, I did not because you're giving them the benefit of the doubt.
SPEAKER_04But they won't get better if they don't know. They won't know. Feedback only only helps. And if you don't know, I feel so bad. Don't be a caring in your room.

SPEAKER_00Just a few things you could do. But funnily, there was another group from our neighborhood who was there who ate inside and they loved it. They loved it.

SPEAKER_00There were plates involved and glasses. And silverware. So it's kind of like they've got the inside down.
SPEAKER_04Because that's a restaurant. But when you're just throwing people outside, I mean.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So, you know. I feel weird complaining just now. You know, I'll keep an eye on it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. It's to be to be determined.

SPEAKER_00Yes. It's run by this guy who's right from the location you would imagine he was from. And the food is supposed to be great. I will say the um the flat bread was very good.

SPEAKER_04Yeah, they got that right.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Flat bread for flat plates for the freaking paper plates from H E B.

SPEAKER_04Dave, so what did you was what was your uh We had a couple incidences. Okay. Oh you saw my list of yard work, right? Yes. That was a good Dave texted us a list of all the stuff he accomplished and had to be. So busy. That was a light day because we only had a little bit of time to do that. So yeah. Um, but we saw an eagle flying over the lake near us. Did it need a wig? It did not.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04No, no, he was fine. No wig needed. No wig needed. Just flying freedom right across over my uh just to let the listener in on the joke.
SPEAKER_03So in our warm-ups beforehand, we start recording and I go through um a list of dad jokes just to kind of like get us in warmed up and stuff like that. And one of them, one of them this week was which bird needs a wig? Yeah, which bird is in need of a wig? Right. And the answer is a bald eagle. So there you go. Perfect. So now you're brought up to speed on the dad jokes.
SPEAKER_04Or inside jokes that you didn't know about until just now.
SPEAKER_03Just now.
SPEAKER_04Yes. And then um Oh, by the way, welcome to the show.

SPEAKER_04Um, but um, so the eagles, they um when they nest, they nest in spots that are close to wiggeries, yes, and but close, like they do it every year. So we should see that eagle all the time now because he's definitely uh nesting in that park over there. So that was kind of cool. So cool. Um yeah. And I started a new streak of personal injuries over the weekend. Okay, yes. Remember last year, my falling and hammering my own hand. Yep. Um, yeah. This time I decided uh it was not enough to me to smash my hand while uh working on that uh planting container that I did. Um, I needed to bash myself in the head with a brake bar, which is basically just a seven-foot metal pole that breaks up dirt and rocks. And and I but I use it to unwedge plants, and we had myrtles we were removing, and I got it wedged in there and it got caught on the branch. And when I tried to pull it out, I bounced it off the front of my head.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, because it stuck in the end of the game.
SPEAKER_04And then game, yes, because it's a giant ass metal pole. And so I decided I was gonna bounce this thing off the front of my head. And it, you know, when like cartoons see stars and and you just get that kind of little birdies about yeah, I had to wait. I had to like stop and just kind of wait for it to kind of subside. That's funny. Yeah, yeah, it was it was cartoonish, but yes, you know, it was always perfect, and then I I had to get back to work. It was then it was continue on your chores. You don't get you don't get that much of a break.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. No no breaks here.
SPEAKER_04No, one break. Get to work. So, yes, got it all done. But yeah, I mean, we do accomplish stuff on the weekends. We went until it got dark that day. Gotcha. And then you played flashlight tag, and then we played and kicked the king. Rule the neighborhood.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. All right, so are we ready to go into 1990? No, I have corrections. Oh, corrections. Okay, I do have a couple corrections. Okay, quick. I didn't figure there were a lot.
SPEAKER_04We do, I did it, wasn't that many? So um, we mentioned that uh Travis and um Taylor were gonna have their wedding, and we were joking around uh places they could do it, and Mount Rushmore came up. I did. Oh I said it in the background, and I said, you know, places that are less less uh popular, but it turns out between June and August, they get 2.4 million visitors. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, not such a quiet place. So not maybe not there. Um, and then uh to confirm, Demi Moore did do boot camp for her movie on G.I. for G.I. Jane. Yes, when we mentioned in the uh private Benjamin that she did uh boot camp. Yeah. Okay. So there you go. Those are my Joanne.

SPEAKER_03Yes, and it broadcasts on YouTube, yeah. So yeah, so we'll find out all the dirt on who's still together and who's not and all that stuff. Yeah, so one thing that drove me nuts. The one thing that drove me nuts is when they were up on that mountaintop, all the freaking flies and bugs that were flying around them, and like they couldn't like get a better place than that or spray some off on them or something. It was just it was literally they're in these moments of like, I really care about you deeply, and I'm considering you spending the rest of my lovely life together and the maybe that was what they were going for.
SPEAKER_04Is that how in named this situation was? Yeah, that's funny. Anyway, so that was. Do you have any predictions on who may or may not stay together?
SPEAKER_00I don't think any of them are successful.
SPEAKER_03I don't think Vanessa in what's his name, or I don't know. She's older than it just I want to call him Nick, but Logan, Logan. Logan, yes.
SPEAKER_00I just don't think that's she looks young, but at the end of the day, she's 49.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And you know, I don't know, and he's 2 too much 3 or 27?

SPEAKER_03They showed him daily talking about Dave, you gotta watch. They all make real connections at the retreat. Jesus Christ. Oh my god, they're so real, they're connections with each other. Almost imagine how horrible this show is. God. You need to watch Dave. It's gotta be a train wreck.
SPEAKER_04Okay, now we can get into 1990.
SPEAKER_03Please. Now we're getting into the innovations of 1990. Yeah, start us off with innovations. Innovations, and the big, big, big thing of 1990 was the World Wide Web. Oh, perfect.
SPEAKER_04Get out our knowing, all seeing innovation. Yep.
SPEAKER_03The first World Wide Web and the first browser launched at CERN, C-E-R-N. Yes. Um, uh yeah, and then search engines began going in, and then you know, by 2000 data. By 1998, then Google was out. And that's been everything, you know, from the term. Oh, did you Google it? Did you Google it? Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_04It's a lexicon now. So yeah, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_03Uh in computer software, and this has changed many people's lives. Adobe Photoshop was created.
SPEAKER_05Oh, wow. In 1990.
SPEAKER_04The most expensive thing I've ever thought I could purchase would have been Photoshop. Yeah, Adobe Photoshop. The whole suite. I mean, Jesus God.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I know. Yeah, with all the yeah, tell me about it. Um also the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990.
SPEAKER_04Yes, it was. Yep. Um, the weird thing is that it was launched early in the year, and we didn't start getting pictures until later in the year.
SPEAKER_03Because it had to get there.
SPEAKER_04Well, but I mean, it's not that far. I think it was the pictures that they were taking were so advanced that uh when they were delivered. Oh, I got it.
SPEAKER_00Did they come did they come back that that year?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was the same year. Like it like in February or March it went up, and then it wasn't until like uh September, October. I I had it in my current event.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. I I always thought it was much later than that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but it's not like on Mars. It's I mean the travel time. They're just it's in orbit. So think of like a signal from a satellite that's showing television. It's right. It's not instantaneous, but it isn't like days.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So other things that were also uh innovative and innovative that year. So did you know that they made a Commodore 64 game system?
SPEAKER_04No, yeah, like an Atari style version.
SPEAKER_03But that same year, the Sega Genesis came out. Oh, so it kind of collapsed. Yeah, and um the uh the Super NES came out that year at night. So Commodore 64 didn't have a chance to get Sega and Nintendo.
SPEAKER_04Just naming recognition, right? Yeah. And what games are gonna be on the Commodore 164?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, go ahead.
SPEAKER_00I have to tell you, I was listening to our last episode yesterday, and my husband comes down.
SPEAKER_04Was it milking? Did you tell him about the milk thing? Did you tell him about the milk?
SPEAKER_00No. Oh, I did. Oh, I don't care. I don't care. Well, that's okay.
SPEAKER_04It's it's what he does.
SPEAKER_00He goes, We were talking about some um text-based video game. Yeah. And he goes, You're talking about me. And I'm like, what are you talking about? And he, I thought he was saying that they had made that game.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_00Because he was a game developer.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, no, they hadn't. But he was just like, That I I do that. That's what I do. I'm like, okay, good. You can, you know, listen to our podcast sometimes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. Connect. He could even we could even get him on one week. It would be great.
SPEAKER_00But he was like, I didn't know you talk about video games.
SPEAKER_04Every once in a while. It's it's all changed.
SPEAKER_00All the time.
SPEAKER_04You have a one in twelve or one in two side.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So Sega Genesis, of course, their their staple and always has been, is Sonic the Hedgehog, and has now gone on to make how many movies and billions of dollars. I mean cartoons. Sega, yeah, seriously. Sega Genesis and Sonic the Hedgehog was is that the princess one?
SPEAKER_00No, that's Zelda. Oh, is that is that Mario?
SPEAKER_04Mario and Zelda. Zelda is a princess one and uh Mario is the yeah.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03Gotcha. You're good at that. Also that year, this was innovation. Slap bracelets. Oh 1990 was the slap bracelet. Now, I I honestly don't even remember seeing those until I don't know, maybe 10 or 20 years ago. Not that far. Yeah, yeah. I mean, but yeah, slap bracelets.
SPEAKER_00When the child was little.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and the summer fun sun sun soaker. The super soaker. The super soaker. Super soaker. Sorry, I had it.
SPEAKER_00You know, my dad had that. Really? Your dad had a super soaker. My dad had the super soaker so he could shoot the squirrels off the deck.
SPEAKER_04So it was strategic. It wasn't funny. For fun. I totally see your dad doing it. I picture it in my head. I can see him. You can just see him out there.
SPEAKER_00Yep. With his Hawaiian shirt. Yep.
SPEAKER_03Shooting squirrels.
SPEAKER_04So he was outside and the squirrels would come up to him? I mean, that's kind of cheaty.
SPEAKER_03Under the fence, right? Or the sorry, the well, yeah, on the deck. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because there's the bird feeder that they liked, right? And so they would come up and they would try to get on the feeder and he'd shoot them with the super soaker.
SPEAKER_04What about the birds? He didn't hit birds.
SPEAKER_00Like it wasn't like a when the squirrels come up, the birds fly away.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, I guess they do. Not in my yard. They don't give a they don't care.
SPEAKER_00You're you just live in um what is the snow light snow whites um.
SPEAKER_04Yes, pretty much, yes. Lisa goes out and the birds just land on her and walks out to the greenhouse. Yeah, pretty much. It helped they help her get ready in the morning all the time. Yeah. Sometimes she drags up, fixes her hair, put in the lunch together, and then they carry it to her uh out to her car.

SPEAKER_03So lastly, so the last innovation of uh 1990 was Windows 3 came out. Windows 3.0.
SPEAKER_04That is amazing. I'm still in 10 and I need to get to 11.
SPEAKER_00I think I'm on 3.0.
SPEAKER_04I think my work computer's eleven. 3.0. I remember when I first was in the middle of it, it was Windows for work groups, and then it went to 3.11. 3.11.
SPEAKER_02It was weird. Oh wow.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So weird.
SPEAKER_03Joanne, you you have icons. Icon of stuff. What was who were the big icons of nineteen ninety?
SPEAKER_00Well, one of the biggest icons who um It ties in with yours was uh Tim Berners Lee. He's the one who created the World Wide Web. Oh, perfect. I thought it was Algorithm. Wasn't it Al Gore? It was Albert. It was not Al Gore. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Jeez, our information.
SPEAKER_04We should hit the World Wide Web and get that. I know. Get that info. Get that Google it. I swear it was Al Gore. That's what I've heard. That's what I've heard. I mean, come on. Who are you going to believe?
SPEAKER_00Our icons. Well, my this is going to be heavily focused on me. Oh, you're on what you think is an icon. It's got to be that way. Exactly. So, well, the first one who I think is pretty universal, uh Nelson Manzala was released. Right. Oh, yeah. Yes. And so obviously it signaled the end of apartheid. He became president of South Africa. It was wonderful. Everything was great for a brief period. Shiny, happy.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00We won't get into anything else. Right.
SPEAKER_02Um, the later stuff.
SPEAKER_00But because of my uh fascination with European communism, which was a class I took in college.
SPEAKER_03Wow. And she was hooked ever since. Man, that one. It just got me. Communism. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Because things were happening so fast, because the Berlin Wall came down in 89. Things were happening so fast in 90 and 91. We had this class, and the professor was just like read the news and write a paper at the end of the term.
SPEAKER_05Wow.
SPEAKER_00So I always thought that was funny. Wow. Um, but so my icons were Gorbachev.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_00He was officially elected as the first president of the Soviet Union and won the Nobel Peace Prize.
SPEAKER_03So can can I pause you on that real quick? Yeah. Yeah. So did you, I know Dave didn't, but Joanne, did you read Bono's book that came out last year or two years ago? He actually talks about an encounter that um uh where he actually had dinner with Gorbachev. So and and talks about how he was like just an absolutely pleasant man.
SPEAKER_00Yes, lovely man, lovely man. And it's it's it that was part I won't go into it, but basically, because of his temperament and his nature, that's why we got so far in negotiations with him. Well Ronald Reagan did, and why ultimately um communism was defeated.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, I hope I'm described that way when I'm in Bonner's book.

SPEAKER_00Germany was reunited. I didn't have that on October 3rd, 1990. So my dude Helmut Cole was an icon for me. He it was it was like this, I don't know what you call it, not trifecta, but like quintifecta or something of Thatcher and Butch and Gorbachev and Cole and Mitterron and like all the dudes. And it was a great time to be alive, I tell you.
SPEAKER_05Big names. Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_00We had uh Mike Tyson was uh was a major icon in the sports.
SPEAKER_03Because he was because in the 88, 89, he was working his way up through the ranks, and yeah, by 90, he was like top of the but you heard that in 1990 he was when he got knocked out by um yeah, he had a bad, bad defeat, it says Buster Douglas.
SPEAKER_04Buster Douglas. Yes, I watched that. It was scary. Yeah, sad. It seemed it almost seemed like wrestling. Like, you know how the wrestling was, you know.
SPEAKER_03Like the Mike Tyson, Jake Paul fight? Yeah, kind of like this whole stage. Like it was stage stage. Yeah, it seemed like it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for the payday. Does he have a legacy of that?
SPEAKER_04Who knows? You know, you almost have to have one.
SPEAKER_03But he did say he wants to fight Jake Paul again this time with no script.

SPEAKER_03I waited so long to see Ghost. Really? Did you? Because it was at the theater at Ferox. I was working there. It seems like that. I was working at the theater when it was out. Yes. And I waited, and everybody was like, oh my God, it's so good, it's so good. And I I think I waited until it went down to like theater four or something. Yeah. Because it was in one and two forever. Oh, yeah. And then by the time it went to four, I went in like one afternoon and watched it.
SPEAKER_04I was like, for people who don't know about theater stuff, one and two were the larger theaters. I mean they held three to three hundred and some people of each one.
SPEAKER_03I think it was four nineteen in theater one. Something like that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Right. And then they just scaled down from there. So once you got to theater eight, it was like 50 people. I mean, it was barely getting back to theater. Think of the scale there. So we're thinking when it gets to four, you know, you're definitely down there.
SPEAKER_03It's been out for probably three or four weeks.
SPEAKER_04And yeah, and it's just been it moves down the rotation before it gets lost. Like it gets it gets sent back.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And so I went to little theater theater for usually the the lower numbers, the bigger the screen. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um remind me to ask you about drive-in.
SPEAKER_03Ask us now. Okay. Sure. Ask us now. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Do you think a drive-in would do well today? No.
SPEAKER_03Do you think so the one on Route 11 right here in Steven City? So it was the family drive-in. It is huge. And they had two screens. When they closed their for business last uh fall, early fall, because they stayed open through I think October first. Um they hadn't worked out a deal because someone the land of the person who owned the land wasn't the person who owned the theater on the land. So the person was selling the land. Right. And they but the theater's been on that property for, yeah, how 30, 40 years or something like that. Yeah. At one point they tried to do like GoFundMe's and like fundraisers to buy the property themselves and do all this whole thing and whatever, and blah, blah, blah. None of it worked out. And they finally, you know, the family drive-in is what it was called in uh Stephen City, Virginia. Yeah. Uh, which is only one of I think 15 drive-in theaters still in existence. It's like 11 or 12, 15, it's a very low number.
SPEAKER_04There's a crap load in Pennsylvania. Like if you're gonna think of them and where they would be concentrated in, they seem to be all in a lot of them are in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, so they cl they went through the end of their season, they closed, they thanked everybody for everything that they did, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And then it's announced probably I want to say two or three months ago. They've worked out a deal. No!
SPEAKER_05Are you hitting?
SPEAKER_03But now they've changed the name and it's gonna be it's the Route 11 drive-in. Oh, that's pretty cool. Which is new March. Yeah. So new merch, exactly. New t-shirts, fresh new t-shirts. New logo, new. Yeah, so the drive-in still is open and did not close, even though it was. Thank goodness.
SPEAKER_04I am I am very happy about that because I think drive-ins add to that nostalgia of things.
SPEAKER_03Oh, absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00So you know, we were talking about buying a movie theater if we won the billions. And the the movie theater here is still for sale. And how much?
SPEAKER_03How much are they asking? Oh, Tony.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I should look it up. But I was doing some research. You could figure that out. Yeah, no, not for that.
SPEAKER_03Um, it's not commercial real estate.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but um I did some Google searching and it said you need like a million dollars in capital because to buy the land, you know, to get it all up and running. Not like I have a million dollars. But I was thinking, like or listening, we like would that be she was thinking David Brown, David Brown here, come on down, and you guys run it. Run it, and then but it said, like, oh, it's all this in concessions and in this and that. And I'm like, well, everybody just come bring your own stuff and we'll just settle.
SPEAKER_04Giving your money back to the theater or distribution. It's all about concessions, it's just the concession.

SPEAKER_04You'd be crazy because of the way all the theaters now are close-knit and owned by three companies, I think. That you would almost be wiggled out of it being a personal. Interesting. And that's I think why the drive-in theaters are like that. Because they have to get their hands on distributed movies. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right. Do they have the new ones or do they have a ones? They do.
SPEAKER_04And if you look at like an Alamo, they do throwbacks, like they'll do anime and they'll do old movies, and and like they had a Jaws one, but they actually, and then I remember in Christmas we went and saw um the Christmas story, and they had a whole thing going on in it, and they handed out the bunny ears, and we had little bars of soap. It was really kind of cool. Um, but you can do that because you can get that movie for pennies. I mean, because it's so old, yeah, right. And it's played on television forever. Right. But then when you show it in the theater, you have to almost have it be an event. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like a Rocky Horror would be an event. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And things like that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, oh, sorry, I forgot to tell you. Oh my god, I'm such a horrible friend. So this past weekend. Which horrible friend are you talking about? I'm I'm a horrible friend to you. Oh my god. Because last week you said on the show that you would go see Project Hail Mary if we wanted to go see it. Yeah. And I was kind of like, eh, you know, I wasn't, you know, I didn't know much about it, and I was happier that way. And I was like, okay. But then my wife asked, she goes, Hey, can we go see Project Hail Mary this weekend?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you said no, because my friend would love to go see it before. Um, and I would love to take him. How about if you asked we could call him?
SPEAKER_03Right. But you were so busy with your list of stuff all day on Saturday, there's no way you would have been able to break free and and Dave. They couldn't have waited till next week. I've saved you three hours of your life.
SPEAKER_05Is it that? Oh, I thought it's not a visual stunner.
SPEAKER_03Not as visual stunning as I would have expected. And it was okay. It was just okay. It wasn't terrible, it wasn't bad. It was just okay. And I would I did not see the whole thing, like, yeah, it was shot for IMAX. Right. And like you're supposed to see it on the biggest screen possible and all this stuff. All the space. And I was just like, I don't I I've seen other movies that are more visually stimulating than this.
SPEAKER_04They say it was it should have been on par with The Martian, if you saw it.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's the same writer, the same guy that wrote The Martian wrote this.
SPEAKER_04But it would almost be like a mirror kind of thing. I mean, yeah, is that kind of where it's going to be?
SPEAKER_03I I thought Well, yeah, I definitely could feel it. Yeah, there was like a feel like, oh, it's just that loneliness in space thing. And you know, and so it it was okay. It's worth the watch, like when it comes on streaming some on some platform, but I would not recommend going to the theater to see it. Uh so I'm a horrible freak. But I saved you three hours of your life.
SPEAKER_04I can honestly say we're even because wasn't there one that Oh, Beetlejuice? Yes, there we go. There we go. I'll never forget Beetlejuice. Yeah, tell me about it. Um I live that too on both sides. Okay, so we're even perfect. Okay, are we good? We're good there. Okay, okay. Well that's fine. That's fine. That's fine. Right.

SPEAKER_04No. Same, same. No. But the sweater that he wears through the whole movie, you can get the pattern for it. Yeah. Sew it yourself. It's not embroidery, but you could sew your own sweater. You could. Project Hail Mary sweater. Hail Mary sweater. And it's the fox, but they sell them as the wolf. And that was the whole uh kind of pro to it. Okay, so number two on your list. Well, and number one was ghost. The horrific sounds made by the dark shadows in the movie were actually sounds of babies crying played slow and backwards. Huh. To make it really disturbing that you had to hear a crying baby in the background. Home Alone was number two. Home Alone. The first Home Alone. The first, first one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was a little bit more. The groundbreaking was number two of the year.
SPEAKER_04I think that was bigger than ghosts. The black and white movie that plays when Kevin's watching, Angels with Filthy Souls. Yeah. Is fake. It's not a real movie. I know. They made it for the movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So they could use the same thing to pay any.
SPEAKER_03Copyright royalties and all that crap. And they created and they made a throwback little gangster film. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Number three was Pretty Woman. Pretty woman. Oh my gosh, that was 90 also. That was 90. Um the necklace scene when she's putting her hand in to grab the necklace and he pops her hand with it. Totally improvised.
SPEAKER_03Yep, unscripted. Yeah, totally improvised. And actually caught her off guard.
SPEAKER_04To get her a genuine reaction. That's her actually freaking out because of what happened. Yeah. So she was like, it was almost a blooper reel, but that didn't, it went in the movie. Yep. Uh Dances with Wolves. I like this movie.
SPEAKER_03I still don't think I've seen Dances with Wolves.
SPEAKER_04It's a long one.
SPEAKER_03Well, I know. But I mean I watched Verizon of it to kind of get it into play.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I think I'm gonna I think that's on my list of the wolf character is two socks, not to ruin anything. Um, but he was played by two different wolves, Buck and Teddy, and they kept him they kept him on set throughout the filming to keep them comfortable. I've also never seen Braveheart. Really? Yeah, yeah, I don't know if he's like, it's been on my list to watch.
SPEAKER_03So that's that was like it was like Godfather. That's on my list to watch. I just never got I haven't got around to it. Really? So yeah. Interesting. Oh, and I did start Godfather Coda. Oh, the throwback. I'm enjoying it. I'm half an hour into it, and I'm like, I'm I don't see what the problem is. Really? So yeah, I don't know. I'm gonna keep watching Pride Nights.
SPEAKER_04Um Total Recall was next. Right. The original, not the throwback one. Um the mutant character with three breasts at the bar on Mars, um, was originally supposed to have four breasts, but it was deemed to be too bovine in in uh nature.
SPEAKER_03So they settled on three. Later quades. That's on uh you know Lonely Island podcast. They have their little thing and they talk about total recall all the time. Right. And Ben Richards and the whole you know thing. And they're some good lines. Um Seth Myers also is on the podcast with Lonely Island guys, and you know, of course, he has his late night show, and he had Arnold Schwarzenegger on his show a couple months ago and actually got Arnold to record the voice note. So at the when they say goodbye at the end, they're like, all right, later quades, later quades, and they're like, later, Arnold, and he's like, later quads. Nice. That's awesome. That's good.
SPEAKER_04So another yeah, uh Back to the Future three. Yeah, the final trilogy. It wasn't, but it definitely ended the trilogy.
SPEAKER_00Definitely included two was the Western one, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_04No, three was the Western one, two was when he went back in time with the uh sports almanac.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh so yeah. Um the uh cameo of Z Z Top, uh, they were playing a variation of their song Double Back.
SPEAKER_03Yep, yep. And they spun his guitars. And they spun the guitars on the things.
SPEAKER_04It's pretty good. Um next was Die Hard 2. Die Hard 2, yeah. I would have to say, not their best for diehards.
SPEAKER_02That was that was the Dulles Airport.
SPEAKER_04It's supposed to be Dulles Airport, and it didn't look anything like Dulles Airport. Because we grew up in Dulles Airport. I mean, we used to be able to go into Dulles Airport and shoot video and just like yeah, the video camera and just screw around and we would carry the camera in with the colour.
SPEAKER_00If you're gonna go to an airport, why not just go to the real one? Like, why do you think it's a good one? Because you shut it down, and plus it was a hub, right?
SPEAKER_04So you would shut it down just filming.
SPEAKER_00Where did they film it then?
SPEAKER_04It was all on set, it was a set. But they were in Denver when they did it, and it was unseasonably snowless when they were doing the snow scene. So the uh the snow that they had was all all artificial. All artificial snow. Yeah, it was artificially created. Yeah, it does. It you know, you don't don't you know don't take it personally. Um, Presumed Innocent was the next one. I don't remember this one.
SPEAKER_02Was that Kevin Costner?
SPEAKER_04No, I think it was Harrison Ford.
SPEAKER_00Presumed Innocent.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because in the thing that it mentioned that Harrison Ford, they had to they plastered his hair so that he looked a little more professional than any of his other roles because Indiana Jones and uh Han Solo. So yeah, they had that one. But um the last production shot was on the Warner Brothers ranch lot right before it was raised, right before they destroyed the whole thing. Oh wow. Okay. So that was the last shot. Of course, if it was a court scene, I'd I have no clue. Because it was supposed to be court, like it was all like I thought the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the first one, which was giant animatronic heads that they had to coordinate the voices after the fact and post-production. Um most of the filming was done in North Carolina due to the cost of filming in New York City. Gotcha. So that was not really shot in the New York, yeah. It is not really as much as it is. And then Turtles in a half shell.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Uh and then the next one was uh kindergarten cop, another Arnold Schwarzenegger. I love that one. Um local kids from Astoria were used, paid $35 a day, and they were not coached, which led to spontaneous reactions to Arnold's interactions because they almost could not contain these kids, they could not direct them. So they were just kind of on their own. That's amazing. They said that was it was the most nightmarish thing to try to get these kids coordinated uh when they were filming it. So I was just I thought that was funny.
SPEAKER_00So funny.
SPEAKER_04I have some honorable mentions. Okay. Uh we have the beginning of Steven Segal's three movie titled movies, uh Hard to Kill and Marked for Death. Right. Were for in that year. Same year. Like they they released them like at the beginning in the middle of the year. So I thought that was kind of weird. Yeah. Uh The Hunt for Red October. Oh, yeah. Dick Tracy was in that one.
SPEAKER_03Oh, and yeah, because that's when because Madonna Madonna did a song on the Dick Tracy soundtrack because she performed it live. Actually, she lip synced it and she admitted to it like before. She goes, I'm gonna lip sync this next one, just so you guys know. And it was the song from the Dick Tracy soundtrack. Oh, wow. Wow.
SPEAKER_04Um, Days of Thunder was in that one. Uh Dark Man. Do you remember Dark Man? I do remember when we were at the theater. That was that was the worst. That was a horrible one.

SPEAKER_04I'm Dark Man. Um Good Fellows, which I didn't think it was that late, but Good Fellows, right? Um Child's Play 2. And one of the ones that really freaked me out, Jacob's Ladder. Do you remember this one? I hated that one. That was freaky. Right in the middle, it was all freaky because it didn't really know what was. Tim Robbins, yeah. And uh supposedly he was subjected to some chemical agent in Vietnam, but then they showed him living, but he died in Vietnam. But they oh sorry, I just threw it. I just totally threw the twist, is that the whole thing is him actually uh in process of dying. Oh, and it was a battle for his soul, good versus evil. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. All right, cool. Yeah, which is weird because it was kind of but that's what kind of made it weird because I saw things in it that was associated with him being uh treated with the chemical and then uh him dying, but then his the son passed away, which was played by uh Macaulay Culkin.

SPEAKER_04So what they do is they held them out and then they don't come to spring training. It's a bunch of things.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's that's was that the one that started uh it was just over halfway through the season, and then they canceled the rest of the season and then were locked out until the next one.
SPEAKER_04No, they uh so I would I would have thought that, but everything about baseball was in all of the current and news. And I was like, wait, so this person hit 300 home runs. I don't know how they did that on strike, so it couldn't have been during the same 32 days.
SPEAKER_03Because I remember because Bill and Jason and I went to an O's game and it got called for rain. Yes, and it never got rescheduled, and never got got picked back up because literally that was the last night of baseball. And they they because they locked the I thought they locked the players out because I remember Jason walking around picking up uh ticket stubs off the ground. Yes, and then found out later that if you had a ticket stub for that you could go back and get a refund, and Jason would have got a couple hundred bucks.
SPEAKER_04He just grabbed them probably for nostalgia. Because they were laying on the ground and yeah, it was just like walked right into money. Yeah, he just walks right into money. Seriously. Um the New Zealand New Zealand Royal Navy discontinued its distribution of a daily rum ration in 1990. In 1990. They had been doing it that whole time. And all of a sudden they're like drinking. SPEAKER_04They were building it as the concerts were going in, and yeah, and then they would cover up the bricks because they were playing in the bricks, like there were things happening, scenes and things like that. Yeah, which was basically the movie, uh, kinda, you know, they were following that stuff. But um, then they would they were piecing the wall together, and then the whole wall just crashed at the end of the concert, which is really kind of cool.
